“Pity fuck?” Charlie smirks over his tea.
Nick shakes his head and digs into his own pastry. “Yes, that. You’ve been waiting all these years to meet someone who makes you feel safe and loved. And God, Charlie, you’re my best friend. Of course I want you to have that experience for your first time. So many people’s first times are utter shit. Mine was utter shit. I’d be an awful friend if I didn’t want you to have the best possible experience.”
Charlie has no idea where he’s going with this.
“So,” Nick says, a little nervous, “if you don’t want the first experience to be with me, then as your best friend, I feel it is my duty to help you find the person it will be with. If you want.”

Finding something — or someone — else to blame has become second nature to Charlie at this point, and he’s very proud of it, thank you very much. Society, Harry Greene, his secondary school teachers who didn’t care about bullying as long as he got good marks, his university lecturers with their classist view of literature, the BBC, gender roles, Freud, his mother, the U.S., London public transport on rainy days (every day), The Sun, the royal family and, best of all, Nick’s heterosexuality.
But no matter how much he thinks about it, he can't quite figure out why Donald Trump in the fucking White House or the Tories in Parliament would want to conspire against him — aside from homophobia, obviously.
So, when it comes down to it, the only person Charlie can blame for his current situation is himself, his stupidity, and nothing else.

Summary
Charlie reaches the thorny, hot-and-frosty stage of recovery that Nick had been expecting in the second week. He snaps at both of them and retreats into sullen silences. He steals all of Nick’s hoodies the second Nick takes them off, pretending not to know that Nick only put them on them in the first place so he could leave them out for Charlie.
Ball of fury that he is in the day, Charlie uncurls at night, just before and while he sleeps. There are no prickly or sarcastic comments as he drapes himself over Nick or drags Nick’s arm or head over the top of him. Nick wisely doesn’t point out the change. He lets himself snuggle and be snuggled. For a few moments after he wakes up, Morning Charlie will be soft and clingy and affectionate, until a bit more consciousness filters in and he starts grumbling for caffeine.
