Two weeks later, she met Comfrey MacLeod, who was fascinated by her, who seemed actively willing to be charmed by her, Marya, who has never charmed anyone in her life. Who did not even look at the licence that was so dearly earned. Clapped her on the back, called her The Kid, as if she had ever been such a thing. From MacLeod she learns that she is scrappy, that she is in some way amusing. MacLeod does not see that she is part machine, because she has buried that deep inside, where it keeps her heart beating. She has a cabin to herself. She sleeps on the floor.

Summary
Marya barely understood her own motivation for stopping by. A good captain knows her crew. Could she truly call herself a good captain, cursed as she was? She knew, in her shameful heart, that she did not want to know this man, that she had bought him along because the way her heart ached to see them together felt like a new way she could punish herself. Watching them together, a whole private history between them, hurt more than she thought it would. Poke the bruise, twist the knife.

Bert considers Marya openly as she scarfs down her stew like a woman starving. She looks different like this, softer. More open, or at the very least more obvious about how closed off she is. There’s grease scuffed across one cheek and something dark under her fingernails. Her spoon clatters loudly, her gulps echoing in the relative silence of the galley. She lowers her bowl from her mouth, eyes lifting to appraise him over its rim. She says nothing.

“That sounds nice,” Adaine says agreeably. She manages not to completely eat shit while she shuffles over and snuggles up next to Ayda, who is wonderfully cosy and warm and who puts an arm around Adaine in a way that makes Adaine want to die on the spot. “Wow,” she says breathlessly, while the lion plays tetherball with her heart, “Fig is really lucky that she’s your girlfriend.”
Hang on, says Adaine’s brain. I don’t think we’re supposed to say things like that.
But it’s true, a different part of her brain argues back against whoever said the first thing. Fig IS lucky.
Well, her brain says, it’s hard to argue with that logic.
“Although you’re lucky to be her girlfriend too,” Adaine adds hurriedly, in case that wasn’t implied.

The kids had already leapt into action. Kristen was calling the group thread to marshal up Riz, Gorgug, and Fabian. Fig had rushed upstairs to throw together a pile of gear, returning with a mishmash of bags and weapons and snacks.
The Court of Stars is not willing to let their Elven Oracle simply walk away. Three weeks after returning from the Nightmare Forest, they make another retrieval attempt. Alone and cut off from her party, Adaine is plunged into a battle of wills as she bides her time for escape
