She looked up. Jinx wasn’t looking at her, eyes locked on the photograph. Her voice was so still, Caitlyn couldn’t tell if it was a confession, or a plea, or both.
“I believe you,” Caitlyn said, after a long moment. Her throat was tight. “But she’s still gone.”

The first time Natalie really notices anything is in philosophy class.
They’re sitting the same way they usually do. Side by side – Jackie once again dragging her toward the front rows, and Nat managing to convince her at least not to go dead center.
The professor scrawls some quote from Kant across the whiteboard. Jackie tilts her head for the fourth time in the past fifteen minutes (Nat is not counting, fuck off). She squints, leans forward slightly, lips twisting into a frustrated little scowl.
