Summary
Gaster never refused a challenge, as the ruler of the Ironfalls, he needed to be the strongest, the most feared king in order to be respected, a philosophy he held in high regards and had tried his best to impart to his elder son, Cross. To stop challenging yourself both physically and mentally meant stagnation, weakness, death.
However, a potential civil war wasn’t the kind of trial Gaster had in mind, as its king, he needed the Ironfalls to remain at the top, feared and respected. But the first prince always had a soft soul with a kindness that had led him to take in a harem of very capable concubines, but one that now pushed him towards challenging his father for the throne.
The king was confident he could ultimately win the conflict, but that would leave the country vulnerable. No, he needed a way to ensure Cross would never again think of opposing his father.
So he decides to hypnotize his son, his harem and the spymaster. Gaster is a little rusty on hypnosis but he’s sure he can quickly get back into things using some tools, to induce both pain and trance.
