There was some noise in the background, what sounded like shuffling - heavy footsteps slapping on tiled flooring. Mark could also hear mechanical beeping - a baby crying. It sounded an awful lot like a hospital. He didn’t know what to make of it. Why would Yiwaa call him from the hospital, or call Mark at all?
Then Yiwaa spoke, her voice cracking on a warble Mark had never heard come from her before, and it felt like he was shattering all over again.
