“David, sit down.”
David whirls to glare at Stevie for the tired order. She’s sitting on one of the benches against the wall with her knees pulled up to her chest. He has no idea how she’s stayed so still for the last…however long they’ve been here. David stopped paying attention to the time and Stevie relieved him of his phone when she arrived.
David eyes the intake nurse who sits behind the plexiglass. It has to have been an hour since he last checked in about his husband.
“Shouldn’t someone have come and gotten me by now? I mean I am his husband!” David reminds her, his voice heading toward shrill. “He’s been back there for too long.”
Stevie lifts one hand to push at the hair falling out of her ponytail. “David, they said they’d come get us—”

Summary
Apparently, and this is wild, shots were fired into the back of an ambulance where the driver who caused the accident was loaded and awaiting transport. Can you imagine? Shooting into an ambulance?
There are so many firehouses in Austin with their own EMS units. On top of that there’s the private companies like Paragon. The odds that the ambulance that was fired on is TK’s would have to be ridiculously small.
The odds, however, have never been something that could be counted on when it came to TK Strand and his penchant for being in the midst of one disaster or another.

TK has a rough shift and comes home to Carlos in the kitchen.
“Carlos collects up the last of the chopped carrots and drops them into a bowl, then pulls over the cabbage and begins to methodically cut it into wedges. TK slides his hand under Carlos’ shirt to rest on his stomach, and feels the muscles there immediately tense up as Carlos laughs.
'Is there something I can do for you, TK? Because I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m kind of busy,' he says, his tone perfectly balanced between affection and exasperation."

Moving back to New York felt like the right choice when life as TK knew it in Texas started to fall apart. Staying permanently felt like the right choice when suddenly his little brother was going to grow up without a mom.
But sporadic trips to Austin continuously remind him that one half of his heart still fully belongs to someone he doesn’t completely have anymore.
