It was a room. A very precarious state of what should be a room. Or maybe cell was a better description. There was a sink and a toilet on one side. A metal bed attached to the wall in front of her. Everything seemed very old, as if it had been stored and forgotten there for years.
Caitlyn saw she was not alone. Under the bed, occupying the smallest possible space, there was a person.
A child.
"What's your name? I'm Vi," she continued when there was no response. If Caitlyn couldn't see the girl's chest rising and falling, she'd doubt whether she was even alive. "This is Caitlyn. Who are you?"
The minutes passed. Caitlyn was already thinking of her fifth contingency plan when the child moved. An almost imperceptible movement. A slight lift of her neck, allowing for a better view of her intruders. "Lavender," her voice was thin, yet hoarse, as if it hadn't been exercised in a while.
"Nice to meet you, Lavender."

In the break room, they had six beds distributed for use among shifts. But Caitlyn's bed wasn't part of that set. No, she had bought a seventh piece of furniture with her own money - with a mattress specifically made for her shoulder and lower back pains.
Everyone knew they shouldn't lie down there. Except, apparently, the new hire.
As a first offense, Caitlyn decided to let it slide, with a simple note on the bed.
"Property of Caitlyn Kiramman."
Maybe the mistake had been due to ignorance, after all. Although, three days later, to her complete displeasure, came her response.

I had originally posted a version of this a few days ago, that one had references to cult violence and cult themes based on the cult I was raised in. A family member found out and gained access to my A03 and deleted the story and the finalized draft from my computer. If you read the first few chapters of the original version, parts will seem familiar but this is a largely different fic. Hopefully it will serve the story even better than the original version.

Caitlyn panicked, feeling extraordinarily unprepared having been thrust into her new position without so much as even a handbook to consult. What were the formalities? What was she supposed to respond with? Where was the damn push to talk button…
“Hellooo? I said Houston, do you copy?”
Caitlyn fiddled with her headset, having finally found the green button on the side and hastily letting out a rather breathless reply. “Um, yes. Hello? This is Houston. I copy.”
There was a long pause in which Caitlyn sat twiddling her thumbs, anxiety pushing the frantic pulse of her heartbeat through her eardrums. Was that wrong? Did she already fuck up? She took a steady deep breath, finger hovering over the talk button until the familiar voice of the astronaut came through her headset once more.
“Damn, Houston. I didn’t expect you to sound so sexy.”
OR
Caitlyn has been assigned as the personal capcom to one of the astronauts currently on a year long expedition at the international space station. Cue long months of pining and desperate longing.

Vi ignored him as movement outside the window caught her eye and she leaned over to see what it was. Her neighbor looked up, their eyes meeting for a brief second. A scowl appeared on the young woman’s face and Vi quickly moved away from the window and took her seat again at the drumset.

Ever since her neighbor had moved in a couple of months ago, it had been nothing but complaint, complaint, complaint. She hated Vi’s music, she hated her friends. She hated the way Vi’s cooking smelled (when she had the misfortune of burning it once or twice). She had threatened to call the landlord when Vi flipped her off after a petty argument about whose responsibility it was to bring the trash cans to the curb. Vi couldn’t stand her. -

The woman blinks owlishly. "Oh. Are you a photographer for the show?"
