Summary

In tales of adventure, the hero has a destiny, a fixed endpoint to their journey that signifies the moment they come into their own and fulfill a spectacular purpose. In tragedies, the hero is fated to fail in this quest and fall from grace. Fate; destiny. Two words with the same meaning, that there is a greater purpose to this life, unfathomable in the moment, yet inevitable at the end.
Mari never believed in either. For starters, she never felt like the hero. Perpetually relegated to the sidelines of other people's stories, she never felt special enough to warrant the universe having a grand plan for her life. When you spend your life being shrugged off and ignored, it's easy to feel inconsequential, like nobody knows who you really are or cares enough to try. But reality is an illusion, too easily altered by forces outside of our perception.
This is what It does best. It watches, It waits, and It hungers.
Invisible omens follow Mari throughout her life, the telltale signs that something was watching her. For years, It was alone. And then there was Misty. Maybe she was never as alone as she thought.

Except Lottie only said that because Shauna was drunk at a party and needed it, and vaguely suggesting fake dating sounded better than admitting that she’s had a crush on Shauna since 6th grade.

If someone had told Lottie that she'd be married to Shauna Shipman she would have assumed that they were going to end up seeing the same shrink.If someone had told Shauna Shipman she'd be married to Charlotte Matthews, she would have been confused. Then she would have knocked them out because Jackie Taylor would have gotten upset.
Or at least that's what Lottie has been able to surmise from watching Jackie's ghost follow Shauna around since she became Charlotte Matthews-Shipman.
