Summary
Kim Dokja realizes it as soon as he sees Yoo Joonghyuk grab a fistful of soil to put in his mouth, or, more precisely, he realizes as soon as Yoo Joonghyuk drops the fistful of soil when he tells him to.
This Yoo Joonghyuk would do anything. And he won't remember doing it. So once Kim Dokja is done here and once he's back to his companions, the Yoo Joonghyuk of his turn, the one he knows, he won't remember any of it. And Kim Dokja can gloat about it, he can make the regressor do something stupid or embarrassing and carry those memories with him as some sort of unusable blackmail. Unfortunately, Kim Dokja can't bring himself to gloat.
He raises his hand and pats the top of Yoo Joonghyuk's head softly, as if scared that a touch too firm might shatter the man like a glass statue.
In this weird predicament with no consequences Kim Dokja learns that most of all he wants to be kind. He wants to give without the fear of being rejected, without the looming idea that Yoo Joonghyuk would remember, or react, or judge, or recoil or…
Kim Dokja is kind.

Nobody ever needed a reason to stay in love, he thought. Falling in love, maybe. Maybe there was something initially that would attract someone to someone else. There had been plenty of those moments throughout the time that he'd known Kim Dokja. But love itself?
Love, he'd learned over his long, long life, was a series of choices. It was choosing that person over and over again. It didn't matter what happened, where those choices would lead you — what mattered was that you chose to stay with them. That you chose to keep being by their side, to keep helping them, to keep wanting to see them happy. Wanting to make them happy.
And Yoo Joonghyuk had mastered the art of choosing Kim Dokja a long time ago.

Kim Dokja smiled bitterly as he watched the man he once loved, now sleeping before him in an awfully quiet bedroom… on the bed they used to share.
Yoo Joonghyuk.
It was strange. He should have known the answer to his question. Surely, Yoo Joonghyuk would have been very happy—ecstatic, even—if he realised that Kim Dokja was dead. Still, Kim Dokja longed to ask Yoo Joonghyuk in person, to hear it from the man himself.
Yet, this was merely wishful thinking. He was dead, and Yoo Joonghyuk had no idea. Kim Dokja was now just a spirit—or perhaps a ghost; he wasn't entirely sure—but the fact that he stood here, transparent and invisible to Yoo Joonghyuk, was proof enough that he no longer belonged to the realm of the living.
Yoo Joonghyuk certainly didn't care he was dead, simply because he already had someone to live and love him, Lee Seolhwa, and Kim Dokja was only was only a spirit who needed to learn to let go.
Could he?

At last, Kim Dokja began to grasp the true nature of his suffering. The legendary hell was not merely a realm of physical torturing but an abyss of emotional anguish. What could be more agonising than witnessing the torment of a loved one while being powerless to intervene? Kim Dokja started to believe that his current state was the real hell; there was no need for him to descend into the Underworld. He was already mired in hellish suffering.
There was no physical pain—only a relentless ache in his heart.
