    Summary

“You might have made a fine ruler,” Bertilak said, rising as their vessel collided with the shore.

“That is true,” Gawain said cautiously, tethering the boat to the base of the cross, “but I am no warrior. To rule in this land is to bring ruin.”

“Better you had died, then, in order to spare countless lives?” Bertilak asked. “You would have made a martyr of yourself like Winifred.”

“Yes,” Gawain said, helping Bertilak out of the boat. “What a queer pair of ghosts we’d be.”

Bertilak sighed, spreading his arms wide. “Lead on, though thy thwarted fate awaits thee.”

“Death is not the thwarted fate I seek,” Gawain said, grabbing Bertilak’s hand, tired of waiting.

    Summary

“I am waiting,” Gawain said, trembling afresh, “for your answer.”

Bertilak draped the girdle aside casually, looking Gawain square in the eyes.

“I have given it,” he said steadily. “This pleases me, Gawain.”

The knight flinched at the sound of his name, though not in fear. His apprehension had begun to fade, drifting like smoke to the high-arched ceiling.

“Then you were not serious downstairs when—”

“I am rarely serious,” Bertilak said, and smiled.

    Summary

A tug at [Gawain's] sleeve returned him to earth again, tumbling him out of his thoughts.

"Like you this chapel?" asked the lord, too loudly, slapping the pew with a smile.

"Yes," said Gawain, glancing once more at the altar. "Truly, I stand in amazement."

"Come, then, you and your amazement both," replied the lord, "and sit."

    Summary

Max is the lost one. “Chrissh-tyan?” he slurs, accent so thick it could be spread on toast. “Wuh-?” He struggles weakly to sit up, flopping helplessly on the mattress and pushing at pillows with small, kittenish movements.
“Shush, shush,” Christian soothes, kicking off his smart trainers and perching on the edge of Max’s sweat-soaked mattress. “Don’t fret, darling.” Never one to give up on getting what he wants, Max crawls over to Christian, laying his sweat-shiny head in the alpha’s lap. He scrunches himself up into a ball, curling up like a pup as he turns his face towards Christian’s stomach. Christian finds his hands combing through Max’s damp hair, teasing golden strands between his fingers. “I’m here, my darling,” he hums, as Max whimpers sweetly against his flesh. “I’m here for you. I’m going to look after you.”

(Max goes into heat just before a race weekend. Christian can't trust anyone else to look after his prize driver, now can he?)

    Summary

Max knows that in order to become great, he needs to do things that other people—other drivers—aren’t willing to do.

So when he bats his eyelashes at Christian Horner, still seventeen but sure of his own cunning, he knows it’s a risk, but Max has always been good at math. He’s calculated this.
