Bucky is back but he is struggling with speaking, and eating, and remembering, and everything else. Still, there are bright moments. Moments when the gulf of time that yawned between the people he and Steve were and the people they are now seems not to matter so much. These are some of those moments.
Steve leaned back against the counter, settling in to watch, not yet sure if he has unintentionally triggered something negative. He waited with held breath while Bucky’s eyes went from relaxed to focused to strained, the cogs of his brain churning to remember something before saying a single word. Steve waited.
“Christmas.”
Steve blinked a moment at Bucky before he looked down at the fruit in his hand he had forgotten about, the connection slotted into place in his own mind. He beamed.
“That's right Buck, we used to get an orange on Christmas. After mass. They were rare back then, expensive.” Steve shimmied back so that he was sitting on the kitchen counter now, he kept his careful eyes on Bucky as he approached slowly. Something still clearly stirring behind his purposeful stare.
