Summary
Swede Jensen is a California stoner and deadbeat who hitches a ride with an eccentric rich weirdo to the Sequoia Twilight Witchcamp, a camp of outcasts dedicated to practicing witchcraft in the most eclectic ways possible. Along the way, Swede comes to terms with personal tragedy while observing the weird and wacky hijinks of his new friends who are all dealing with a horrible truth: that they are characters in a story, and their words and actions are at the whim of the narrator who is telling it. Will they escape the confines of their fictional world, or learn to love Big Narrator?

Did you know there are idiots who dump their loved ones' cremated remains in the Haunted Mansion ride? I learned that, and now it is your problem.
When Jack unceremoniously dumps Edward's cremated ashes in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride (when he'd SPECIFICALLY asked for Pirates of the Caribbean), Ed finds himself a member of a fascinating crew of ghosts, each who had been laid to rest there before him. Ed finds himself fascinated learning about the crew and how they spend their time, in particular the instigator of all their shenanigans: one Stede Bonnet, a ghost in a ridiculous suit full of even more ridiculous ideas about how ghosts should be spending their time. Will Edward take his place in the weird little family in their weird little theme park ride, while coming to terms with those he left behind in life? Yes. But read it anyway, it's silly and cute.

Summary
Literary scholars are reeling after a once-in-a-lifetime discovery hidden in a vault belonging to the famed 19th century publisher Benjamin Hornigold. A heretofore unknown work by the notorious adventure novelist and traveler Jonathan “Calicut Jack” Rackham has been released over a century after his mysterious disappearance in 1913. A controversial figure in his time, Mr. Rackham was both celebrated and abhorred for his novels which were known to be as linguistically exaggerated as they were absurd.
The work (which appears to have faced censorship at the time of its publishing due to the gratuitousness of its language) is an obviously fictional account of Mr. Rackham’s last journey with famed scientist Edward Teach in which he claims that they discovered a new species of human which possessed the upper-body of a human and the lower-body of a fish! This work would therefore be one of the most detailed accounts of mermaids (and mermen) to precede the 20th century. If, of course, the reader is so easily swayed as to believe it.

There had been an accident.
Ed and Stede were painting the bedroom again, this time Stede was sure the color they chose was the right one, the one that would tie it all together for sure. And Ed had been good-naturedly ribbing him, as they did, about maybe the lavender being too bright. They had been laughing and Ed had had a point to make, a point he of course had to make by gesturing emphatically with his brush, the brush he had recently dipped in the bucket. And, of course, paint flew everywhere.
“Oh, shit,” Ed had said absently, trying to assess the immediate damage to the floor and their furniture. “Sorry, love, this is a bit of a mess, hope you like some lavender on the bed, oops.” And he laughed, back still turned to Stede. This kind of thing tended to happen when they renovated together, really.
And he didn't notice. He didn't notice that paint had splattered all over Stede's face and shirt. Until he turned and Stede was just standing there covered, not saying anything.
