    “You’ve had a lot on your plate,” Viktoria says, firm and calm, yet a sarcastic and venomous knife in reminder of what Jayce had told her during his first weeks as councilor, the very first time he apologized for not visiting the lab as often as he should, “I get it. You have more important things to do.”

     

    “It’s not like that, and you know it,” Jayce replies, taking her arm so that she looks at him. His touch is warm, and it has always made her feel safe. Today? It’s sickening; “I care for you, Viktoria. You’re my partner.”

     

    Partner. That’s a word Viktoria has learned to loathe.

    Weeks before her graduation, Dmitri and Viktoria make a deal: If they are still single at the age of thirty-five, they will get married. It's a joke, until it isn't, and Viktoria comes to realize that Jayce Talis will never love her back.
