Summary
Bucky knows who he should be, the person that people expect him to be. He is also painfully aware that ‘Bucky’ is not the one looking back from the mirror. This body belongs to James Buchanan Barnes, yet there is no one to whom he could give it to who could fit the label.
It feels like a betrayal to a forgotten memory when the first hint of belonging is found within the eyes of the man who is to blame for the shards that keep falling from the shattering teacup that is his mind.

“The kind with a brilliant mind and a pretty face. She seems particularly taken with one of Piltover’s youngest and brightest. For a moment,” Mel continued, stepping closer and brushing her fingers across his cheek, “I thought she was talking about you.” Her laughter followed, light and musical, as she moved past him.
Jayce’s smile faltered as a sudden realisation came to the forefront of his mind.

“It does not exactly feel like a… Safe place.”
“I made sure it is safe,” Jayce replied with soft determination, shifting. Viktor automatically scooted over a little, intuiting what his intentions were, and Jayce dutifully sat down on the mattress.
And Viktor couldn’t help the soft gasp coming out of his mouth the moment the rest of Jayce was hit by the faint, weak light.
He looked, frankly, like hell. There was a gauntness to his marble-chiseled features Viktor had never seen before; his hair was long, shaggy, as was his beard, heavily framing the taut line of his mouth pressed together in clear exhaustion.
Viktor blinked repeatedly as their eyes met. There was an abyss previously unknown in Jayce’s amber eyes, a sort of keen, smothered pain simmering in the depths of them as he quietly stared at Viktor.
“...For how long have I been unconscious?”

The passage of time should be left well alone, yet it is not. And it might just be the last push toward oblivion.
Somebody refuses to learn that lesson.

After Viktor's experiments with the Hexcore accidentally summon something that kills Sky and leaves Viktor strangely changed, Jayce is desperate to keep Viktor safe from the increasingly bloodthirsty monster on the loose.

“I know, I’m working on it,” he says. “I just want him to be comfortable. There’s been a lot of bad shit in our past. If I can show him that things can change here, I will.”Cait looks at him fondly. “That’s a very noble goal, Jayce.”
Jayce really, really wishes he could agree that any of his Viktor-related goals are noble. From where he sits, they’re all varying degrees of selfish, licentious, unrealistic, and horny.
