This is a story about the first time Peridot fused. Well, this is a story about a lot of things happening to Peridot for the first time, but it's mostly about the fusion thing.
Things got messy afterwards. They - that is, Peridot and Lapis' fusion, which is sort of "they", right? - ran to Pearl for help, and Pearl found she might actually be the one who needs helping, and then everything kind of spiralled from there, but that's not important. Peridot and Lapis fused, and that's a good thing.
It is a good thing, right?

Summary
Circuses barter in fantasy; they bottle the impossible, box the unbelievable, and pawn it all for cash. And why shouldn't they? There's an audience. And while it's all well and good for Barnum and Bailey to sell that audience the "firebreather sumersaulting over ten lined-up elephants" kind of fantasy, there's cheaper options that do the trick. If you're looking to make someone question their eyes, you don't need a magical castle - you just need a stage and some freaks to throw on them.
TL;DR: It's the 1920s, Caine is travelling across America running a ramshackle exploitation sideshow, and all of the cast are freaks under his dubiously-ethical employ.

Picking up the pot, Gaara straightens, letting Naruto get a better view of the cactus. It’s green, plump, with flat pads speckled with clusters of tiny spines.
“What’s that for?"
“Oh.” He looks somewhat uncomfortable—it’s comfortingly familiar. One of the Five Classic Gaara Expressions that Naruto has come to memorize; a step below the elusive half-smile. “It’s for you.”
Naruto stares at it, then glances back up at him, searching for some kind of indication as to what the esteemed Kazekage is doing here on a random afternoon with a random cactus for him. He reaches no conclusion.
The first cactus makes sense. The ones that follow... Well, Naruto's trying to figure that out.
