“Just a visit from my guardian angel,” Cloud mutters. He's sure that half the inn heard him screaming in his sleep – Tifa's brought it up enough times back in Midgar that he'll never forget that it happens sometimes. Embarrassment colours his cheeks just as brightly as the illusory fire had.

Three rebujitos over the counter at the Bar Del Sol, and Cloud’s head is still far too busy. The gag-worthy mix of lime, jalapeño, and cloying agave – one of their ‘tropical specials’ – isn’t enough to wash the taste of bitter fear out of his mouth. Perhaps the worst thing is that the others barely seem to notice.

There’s something tiring in the snow; that, or in Cloud’s bones. Perhaps it’s grief, perhaps it’s something else, fuzzing up his synapses. It started after he slipped that swirling materia into his sword’s slot, like it was meant to be there. Like it was made for it, or he was born for it. The sharp spike of an unseen blade snags in the gap between his skull and his spine, and he coughs blood into the sink. It isn’t red, not anymore.
He thinks he’ll go with grief. He doesn’t like any of the other options.
