“You know the usual me. The one that always goes with you when there's a magical threat, just to ensure your safety.” He hoped that his attempt at lightening up the mood would break some of the tension. Unfortunately he saw Arthur's shoulders tense up a little.
"Merlin, you are not riding out with us" Arthur still didn't even look up at the younger man, keeping his failing attention on papers, his voice trying to take on a nonchalant tone but his piercing gaze only intensifying in its severity.
OR
A different take on the episode “The Last Dragonlord” where Arthur didn’t relent and actually forbade Merlin from riding out with him to fight the dragon. Of course Merlin ignores him and tries to face it alone, although this time he doesn’t know if he will even get a chance to succeed, all the while Arthur tries to ensure his servant’s… his friend’s safety.

Summary
Chuuya dares not flick on the light, afraid of triggering Dazai in case he's in a jumpy state, instead opting to shuffle closer to the bed. He does it slowly, dragging his feet a little so the man can hear him approaching, even if he doesn't see him. When he's close enough that his toes bump against the edge of the bed, he tentatively reaches out one hand, signalling his anticipated movement, and lowers himself onto the mattress.
Slowly, his eyes adjust to the darkness.
Dazai is sitting in the middle of the bed, legs crossed, back straight, eyes open and staring straight ahead of him. That way lies the door, the same one Chuuya just walked in through, so the gravity manipulator has to accept that his partner is too far out of it to have noticed him enter.
OR
Dazai has a bad depressive/disassociative episode. Chuuya was off on a mission for most of the day, so he only comes back after Dazai has been alone in this state for... Who knows how long.

The last matcher Uther hired has an idea why Arthur isn’t finding a mate. Uther is both happy that a solution may come and annoyed at who exactly that solution might be.
Very similar start premise as Babby Heat but this splits from that one pretty fast

Summary
“I know I’m a prince, so we can’t be friends. But if I wasn’t a prince—”
Arthur can’t stop thinking about those words. About what he really wanted to say. Hours later, when Merlin’s dressing him for the fight with the dragon, very clearly trying not to cry, Arthur has a decision to make. Either listen to his father’s voice in his head and ignore it, then possibly die while trying to save Camelot, with regret being the last thing he remembers. Or, use this last moment with Merlin to act like true friends do, and offer him a shoulder to cry on.
In the end, it really isn’t a hard decision at all.
Set in the episode 2x13 The Last Dragonlord.
Written for The Merlin Library's Monthly Prompts: "You don't have to act like you're okay."
