There was a boy sitting on the bleachers.
To be honest, Derek wouldn’t have given him the time of day normally, but there were a few things that struck him as odd. Firstly, there was still a good thirty minutes before school let out. Secondly, the boy was silently staring out towards the preserve with a pensive expression. Thirdly, he had no scent, and his heartbeat was non-existent.
Okay, maybe he should have led with that, but the point was, there was a boy sitting on the bleachers, and Derek seemed to be the only one who could see him.

Summary
This time, when he comes to, Curly finds himself back on the lounge-room couch. The coarse fabric feels the same as it did under his fingers before everything happened, and the plush is just as lumpy.
He looks up, expecting to see the familiar nighttime screen. The dead pixel to jump out at him, after spending so long being unnoticed. When his eyes register what he’s seeing, however, Curly lets out a yell.
It’s… black. Not as in black the way a night sky is, freckled with the small white stars and an opaline moon.
Off. malfunctioning. Dead.
Twenty years later, the air supply in the cryopod finally runs out. Curly had expected this. Awaited it, even. What he didn't expect, was to find himself back infront of the nightime screen with one of the main subjects of his guilt.

“Are you ok, Captain?” Daisuke looked at him concernedly, Swansea annoyed. He opened his mouth, realising this would be the first time he’d talked in months. The words came smooth. Like nothing had ever happened.
“I’m just really worried about Jim.” His mouth said. He’d thought of this scenario, while waiting to die on that bed. “He’s been acting super irrationally since the news at my birthday party.”
“Anyone in his position would be.” Swansea said, crossing his arms. “With his short temper? It'll blow over, it always does with Jimmy.”
Curly’s jaw clenched, that had been his exact view of the situation, until… well, until. “He’s been threatening me.” He lied. “And himself. He’s been pinging all the captaincy markers for a dangerous level of suicidal ideation.”
He just needed to set this up. Needed to set it up so it wouldn't be a shock when he died.

What happens when a man left to stew in his own thoughts for months gets sent back in time? He finally manages to do what he's imagining for ages.
Or, the one piece of characterisation we get of Curly post-crash (thats not projection or a hallucination) is him laughing when Jimmy picks up the gun, I want to explore that side of him.

Curly had always been told he was a good captain. Eventually, he had to believe it. He was, wasn't he? He wouldn't have gotten to his position and maintained it for so long if he wasn't after all.
But what does a good captain do when faced with two crewmates, two friends, who clash heads? What does a good captain do when one friend unforgivably hurts another? Should Curly try to find some way to keep the peace and delay a whole cascade of issues from erupting? Or should he... do the other unfortunate thing a good captain must do.
Take responsibility.
(A fix-it fic that is literally named "What if Curly actually stopped Jimmy before everything went to absolute crap" in my google docs. I wanted them to have a happy, good ending, okay. The game hurt me in the best way possible, but now I want to fix it and give it my version of the ✧˖°.good ending.°˖✧)
