As the cloth fell to Lawrence’s waist and left him naked and exposed, Ali exclaimed, “Habibi!” The word punched from him with a sharp intake of breath at the sight of Lawrence’s flayed skin. Ali didn't know if he heard the word as friend or beloved and, in truth, he wasn’t sure himself which he meant by it.
“Is it that bad?” Lawrence asked.
Ali, lost for words, said, “It… it looks uncomfortable.”
Lawrence laughed. “Ali,” he said, “You’re practically an Englishman in your mastery of understatement. Yes, it is a little uncomfortable. But I can bear it.”

Paddy is in the middle of overseeing the operation, directing stretcher bearers out to the waiting vans, when one of the skeletons slumped against the far wall raises its emaciated head and says, in a voice that Paddy has heard night after night in his dreams, “Paddy.”
The whole world narrows to a single point. For a moment, Paddy sways on his feet like a staked bull, not moving, not able to lift his head to look, because— because it can’t be, it can’t be—
And then the figure staggers to its feet, limps unevenly towards him, and Paddy’s eyes snap up and.
And it’s Eoin.Dismantling a PoW camp in 1945, Paddy stumbles across an old ghost.

It has been two years and four months since he has heard Eoin’s voice
Paddy takes a shuddering breath, fixes his gaze on the lapping water in front of him. Eoin has never spoken to him before, had always remained that perfect image lingering on the edge of his vision, haunting him. A reminder of what he had lost, what he yearns for, the other half of him that has been missing now for longer than Paddy had had him. He hasn’t allowed himself to think like this. Been easier to pretend that Paddy is repenting for an unmatched love, a debased desire, the sinful revisionist rewriting of history. That it hadn’t happened at all.
