‘His grave-digger remained silent, and Merlin was forced to blink away the haze in his eyes while he took shuddering breaths, trying to remember how to be in the world again. What his eyes first caught, before his vision returned to him fully, was the glint of something metallic covering the body before him. The silhouette was bulky against the sun, and the shoulders were hunched slightly as if carrying a great weight, heaving with deep breaths. Then, he saw the blonde hair, and his breath caught. Finally, his vision came fully to rest on a pair of blue eyes.’
Merlin has almost given up hope waiting for Arthur's return. So of course, that's when Arthur decides to return.
