Summary
He found, to his surprise, that he actually missed the sight of Bill Stirling slouching towards him across war-torn villages, his face like a thundercloud. He missed their sparring, missed the brief, bright flare of true companionship between them and the promise it had held. Which was perhaps why, when Bill wrote to him at the Ayrshire camp, a letter sent from his estate barely thirty miles away, Paddy took the letter to a private place and read it carefully. And then, almost without meaning to, he wrote back.
Bill and Paddy strike up an unlikely correspondence in Scotland which survives the war and lasts for years. As their friendship strengthens and deepens, as it teeters on the dangerous edge of something more, they help each other through difficult times and hard decisions and realisations about who they truly are, until, in the end, they find their way back where they belong.
With each other.

Summary
Eve Monsour had been the one to tell Augustin the news. She had cornered him and Paddy one smokey evening, where they were sitting in a back corner of the Empire Club in Cairo, their collars loose around their necks and a healthy dose of drink in their hands. Augustin remembers, with almost painful sharpness, the precise way Paddy’s knee had been pressed against the side of his own, hidden underneath the table.

Summary
Everyone always thinks of Eoin as the cautious one. He's the calm one, the one who keeps them just this side of the line.
The truth is that Eoin sees the line as a flexible thing. If Paddy weren't around, Eoin would still get into just as many scrapes. He might not win as many but he can talk himself into plenty of trouble when he's feeling mischievous.

Summary
“God, we should never have let you two become friends,” Seekings says then with a sigh, though there is an amused glint in his eyes, a trace of hidden delight. “I don’t know if you’re making Paddy better or worse, Jordan, but he’s got to be making you worse.”
“Actually, he’s got you all fooled,” Paddy says. For a moment, he moves like he is going to pat Augustin on the shoulder, but changes his mind mid-way, instead going wider and slamming it down on the table. Augustin’s skin tingles regardless. “Augustin looks all serious and respectable, what with all of his Sorbonne-trained snobbishness, but he is, at heart, also a bastard.”
Augustin laughs. “That is the closest you’ve ever gotten to complimenting me, Paddy.”***
