At Alex's questioning stare, Hiro continues, "The rift between us didn't happen because we got separated, Alex. It happened when you grew wings on your back while mine stayed bare. Subconsciously, you began resenting me for abandoning you. With me not growing wings, it meant that we weren't the same anymore and that our experiences would be different now. I was no longer your other half, let alone your brother."

It is the ugliness of the pursuit of those blessings that sickens him. War, needless suffering, countless deaths…Hiro does not think of himself as a good person.
Maybe that's why he woke up in the dead of night to an excruciating pain on his back; maneuvering his left hand to reach behind, he felt a damp softness. Hiro motioned his fingers to close around the softness and gently pull. Taking his hand back, he felt his breath stop at the sight.

"Crap!" the food truck worker shrieks in alarm. "Don't hurt him, Superman, he's just a kid!"
Clark . . . pauses, then looks up from the kid that he is currently pinning into the street as said kid struggles underneath him.
"'Hurt him'?" he asks in reflexive confusion, and then realizes how batting a teenager around like a person-shaped cat toy and pinning him to the street hard enough to crack it probably actually looks to an outside observer.
. . . um.
Whoops.
"Um," he starts awkwardly, and then the kid slips his pin while he's distracted and throws his arms around his neck with a gleeful laugh and a bright grin.
"Dad!" he crows triumphantly, and hugs Clark harder than literally anyone has ever hugged him before.
