    Summary

Shoving herself upright, she splashes beige tinted water onto her face from the trickling tap before forcing herself to meet her own eyes in the mirror, the starkly white wash of her skin making her look ill. The drift of her hand drags her shirt back up and her breathing catches, an undignified whine slipping out of her as she stares unblinkingly at that small protrusion, it's existence undeniable now that she knows.

    She's pregnant.

And she can't tell Joel, he can't know.
    -
Tess makes the belated realization that she's harboring a tiny fugitive (Ellie) and decides that it's best if Joel doesn't know (Outbreak compliant, takes place within Boston QZ)

    Summary

“Duck do?” Ellie asked from her spot in the carrier.

Joel kept a hand on her back as he scrambled eggs. He was half twisted away from the stove to keep her out of kicking distance of the pan, “Quack-quack.”

    “Dog do?”

    “Woof-woof.”

“Snail do?” She peered up at him expectantly.

“Snails don’t make a sound,” He flicked the burner off and scooped eggs onto the waiting plate.

“Yep,” Ellie brightened, “They do crunch!”

    Summary

“Woah.” Ellie’s face is inches away from her window when Tess looks back, her gaze fixed on the deer. “They’re so big.”

“There’s a whole lot of things bigger than them,” Tess snorts.

“The only animals I’ve seen are birds and dogs.”

    Right.

Joel rolls down his window and she’s hit with a blast of cold air to the face. She’s thankful, actually, as the roar of the wind fills the car, drowning out any of the kid’s attempts at further conversations. He rolls it back up once the sun has started to set, the insects beginning their evening songs.

“You would be nothing without me.”

“And you would be lost without me,” he counters, murmuring sweetly. She’s gone stiff, but ultimately and begrudgingly yields to his touch. “What is worse? To be nothing or to be lost?”
