“Look, whatever you’re going to do, just do it. As long as I’m in here, I have nothing I can offer you.”
Caitlyn sputters. “You can’t just—!”
“Yes, I can,” Vi interrupts, whipping her head back around to glare at the high-and-mighty Enforcer who thinks she can just dangle things like sisters and names in front of Vi. And, because it’s cruel, she bites out, “If that fae girl knew about him, he’s probably in the fae lands. Humans don’t usually make it out of there, and if they do, it’s not in one piece. You’re better off believing he’s dead.”
Caitlyn inhales sharply. “He’s not,” she says fiercely, but Vi can hear the tremor in her tone.
“Go ahead and take out your iron weapons or whatever you’re using today, won’t change the fact that I don’t know shit about your Jayce Talis.”
“Fine,” Caitlyn snaps. “I’ll go to the fae lands and find him on my own.”
Vi laughs out loud. “Good luck with that,” she sneers. “The fae lands are going to eat you alive.”

If Vi had her choice, she'd never have been rescued by an Enforcer. But if it gets her back to Powder, she'll help this Caitlyn Kiramman find her missing friend. No other feelings could possibly arise from this arrangement.

Summary
“I just introduced myself,” Jayce repeats defensively. He’s not sure what’s wrong with that, but the look on Viktor’s face is withering.
“You gave Singed your name,” Viktor says bluntly, “Offered it up on a platter, and he took it from you. He holds your name now, and he is free to command you as he sees fit.”
Jayce’s brain short-circuits. “What?”
Viktor walks over to one of the many piles of books and picks up one of the thicker, dustier tomes. “Humans are all the same,” he mutters. “You all are obsessed with the arcane and what can be done with it, but you never take the time to learn the rules.”

After Viktor goes missing, Jayce takes matters into his own hands, then accidentally gets himself imprisoned right alongside his partner. Or, the fae-au.

“Professor?” A voice calls, and Jayce has about two seconds to feel the hot little sting of hurt that he’s not the only one working with Heimerdinger after all, when Viktor steps fully into view, and Jayce catches sight of him.
Or—it. It’s an android.
It takes him a moment and another careful look to be certain, but—yes, it’s got a more subtle variation on the Academy staff bot uniform, white and muted browns, and the College of Sciences insignia pinned to the breast of its waistcoat, and where its shirtsleeves are rolled up to its elbows, Jayce can see the fine, thin lines running up its forearms, the divots in the synthskin showing where the metal plating must connect below.

Jayce desperately wants to rub at his forehead, but the binding at his wrist stops him. He settles for squeezing his eyes shut. “Why?” he asks.
Viktor is silent for barely a moment. He says, tonelessly, “I assumed this was preferable to dying.”

“What--” He stops to compulsively lick his lips. His back hits the wall-- he’d started backing up at some point and he hadn’t noticed. He can’t tear his eyes away from the man on his couch. No. The creature. “What are you?”
Martin finally looks up from his book. He looks at Jon. He doesn’t look like Prentiss. He isn’t full of gaping holes that should have killed him, he isn’t covered in squirming, shiny white worms, he doesn’t smell like a moldy, rotting corpse. He looks like a pleasant, normal man. He has freckles scattered across the bridge of his nose, his cheeks. Monsters shouldn’t have freckles, Jon thinks nonsensically.
“I’m your boyfriend,” the monster sitting on his couch says, as if this is a matter that is not up for debate, that Jon has no say in.

“Uh, yeah? I saved you from getting shanked in the shower, so fair’s fair. What’s your deal, topside?”
“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”
