    Summary

    Bucky Barnes was cold.

He felt like he’d been cold for months now; doing nothing but experiencing one unending chill after another. He’d been cold in England, and again in Italy, and again especially in Austria – both while he was kept in an underground cell, and when he was strapped without cover to the unforgiving metal of Zola’s lab table.

But Steve… Steve Rogers was sunshine. Everything about him was warm, from his crinkly-eyed smile to his white-hot rage. Steve was Coney Island on a summer’s day; lying back on high rooftops to watch fireworks on the 4th of July; drinking stolen whiskey in his parent’s living room…

Loving Steve was a fact – simple and plain, like breathing air or bleeding red; loving Steve was soldered into his skin like a tattoo – it buzzed in his brain like its own kind of high. It was a part of who he was.

    Summary

“Your son, Madame,” Steven began, gentling his tone as though to coax a small, lost creature to its first meal in weeks, “The Marquise is ... Adrift.”

She closed her eyes, drew a deep and shaking breath. “Not entirely,” she allowed, and took up her cup. “Not just yet. Though I do confess it is a painful relief to hear the matter put plain at last." She sipped, her eyes fixed on a traveling point beyond the windows, which Steven felt sure he could guess unseen, then she rallied herself at last to the confession.

"There was a false bonding," she said at last. "A profiteering roué, who saw my son as part of a prize to be stolen. As if he were not worth so very much more-"

A raucous shout and rattle of leaves brought Steven's attention to the garden at last, and he saw that the young Marquise had gotten himself into the drooping boughs of a myrtle tree, and was dangling like a sloth, ivy leaves laid over his eyes like Alexandrian pennies. He appeared to be singing as he rocked the branch to and fro, lost to the seeking of delight and sweetness, as could so easily happen when an omega's heart lay in ruins.
