    “What a fearsome and clever thing you are,” Hannibal says, expression bright and proud and smug, standing at center stage in his cell. The orderlies have already filed out and the straitjackets have been put away for next time. “‘The universe in ecstatic motion.’”

    They are standing in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, separated by a pane of bulletproof glass. They are sitting in front of the Primavera in Florence, and clutching each other on a cliffside over the roiling Atlantic.

    They’re kissing in Tokyo and embracing in Havana; killing a man in Catania and drinking wine by the fire in his Baltimore office.

    Or, five years after the fall, Will and Hannibal are apprehended, landing them back in the BSHCI under Frederick Chilton’s tender care. A lot has changed, but serial killers are still drawn to the East Coast like moths to a flame and the FBI still flounders in their wake. A SOTL retelling, where Hannibal and Will are playing a game of their own and Clarice wishes these crazy sons of bitches would care about saving lives just half as much as she does.

    “Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”
