It was one of those nights.
He was in bed, his eyes heavy and closed but the sleep refusing to take him. He blamed the hollow pit in his chest, a constant thing that was so much easier to ignore when his mind was buzzing with purpose and plans and rage. Now? In the middle of the night with nothing to distract himself with?
It burned.
It was one of those awful nights he hated the most, so he'd left the door open. Just slightly. Just enough. When he heard the door creak as it was slid open further? He didn't question anything, just let the relief relax the tension from his body and squeezed his eyes shut in his poorly feigned sleep.
When he looked back on this moment, he would remember that his uncle was usually quieter than this.
Much quieter.
The suspicion didn't creep in until the other person was standing directly over him. Whoever it was was breathing heavily in a way that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. No way this was Uncle.
He opened his eyes just in time to see the figure lunge at him.
It wasn't enough time for him to react and dodge the hands grasping at his throat.

Summary
Zuko doesn't know what's going on. He's looking for his uncle, and doing Jet's laundry, and trying not to think about why he's woken up in random fields twice (and also how he's not dead, after that one time).

He knew what this was.
He’d expected this, they all had to some degree, though none had predicted it would happen as soon as a week after. None of them had prepared for it, leaving Zuko alone. Defenseless, one could argue.
But Zuko hadn’t lived this long for no reason, had clawed his way out of ashes and blood to sit upon this cursed throne, and he would defend it with his life, if that was what it took.
