He clutches Maverick's hand, trembling, and listens as his gurgling breaths grow shallow, the red stain on the snow beneath him growing larger.
Maverick wheezes out a final, rattling breath. Rooster chokes down a sob, curling over his body, and then -

A series of fics set (mostly) in a universe where Arthur has finally returned, 1500 years later, and so has Morgana, Gwen, and the Knights of the Round Table (excluding Mordred, for now), though they have been reincarnating throughout history multiple times. Merlin has been immortal this whole time (doesn't mean he hasn't died temporarily before, though) and Arthur was dead for ages, so he has a lot of catching up to do ...

Bradley pulled back sharply, leaning back into his chair. His eyes were sharp on Maverick. “Promise?”
Maverick’s eyes widened when he realized what he said.
“I promised your mother I’d keep you safe,” he hedged, looking carefully at Bradley.

"Hey there," Iceman murmurs, holding his hand out to Maverick. "C'mere, I won't hurt you. I promise."
There must be witchcraft or something in Iceman's voice- Maverick's pretty sure he wouldn't be losing his mind over it otherwise. Things only gets worse when his legs decide to move him towards Ice without his brain's permission.
"That's it," Ice says in that same low, almost hypnotic voice. He runs his fingers gently over Maverick's furry head, and it feels a little too good, because Maverick starts purring. "There you go. Aren't you pretty, huh? Yeah, you are. Got the prettiest green eyes I ever saw, you know that?"
Or, the one where Maverick gets turned into a cat and almost explodes when Ice pets him and tells him nice things. Twice.
