There’s a sadness in Yancy’s eyes that he wants to claw out. “Can’t do that, Eth,” he says, soft, apologetic, and it makes the world tilt at all the wrong angles, this twisted sympathy.
“Why not?” he chokes, blinking desperately to try and keep Yancy’s form in focus beyond the stinging in his eyes.

Hanahaki Disease was distinctive enough that even Tony could recognize it. He’d heard of it, he just hadn’t ever thought it could happen to him. It was the sort of thing he associated with lovesick melodrama, more fitting for a cheesy telenovela plot than real life. At sixteen, he felt far too old for that sort of thing. And more importantly, he wasn’t in love with anyone.

Listen. I don’t really read the Hanahaki trope. It’s just not my cup of tea. But my friend is so damn talented, and this story truly evokes a whirlwind of emotions, and I’m still not entirely sure where mine land, other than to say I thoroughly enjoyed this story. 10k rarely flies by so quickly, so seamlessly. If you’re also not a fan of the trope, you should give this one a try.
