Pesky Machine

Chapter Text

“Why do they want to capture us?” Simon asked, visibly nervous.

Scar waved his hand in the air nonchalantly. “Oh, something about keeping the anomalous out of the public’s eye and maintaining order.”

Grian soured. “Sounds like hybridism to me.” Doc nodded in agreement.

“Another interesting thing I learned,” Scar’s eyes glowed brighter in excitement, “is that there is a rebel group, directly opposing PIL, called Convive.”

“That sounds promising.” Doc rumbled. He was no stranger to rebellions, and this one seemed likely to help them.

“Yeah. Their whole goal is that they want humans and the supernatural to live together, in harmony. In a world like this, it seems unlikely to happen, but who knows? Maybe they’ll succeed. Whether they do or not, they’ll probably help us.”

“We have to find them before PIL finds us .” Xisuma stated.

Scar nodded. “I’ve been inside PIL’s minds. They’re smart. This isn’t that far away from the apartment, and abandoned buildings are the first place they will be looking for us to hide.”

“Well, we can’t really go anywhere without them knowing.” Jamie shifted on her barrel, trying to get comfortable. Her eyes were hard with anger. Doc studied her. She was a fierce one. “There are security cameras everywhere in Vegas. They probably have access to them.”

“That’s taken care of.” Doc said. “I hacked into all the cameras in the city. They’re disabled, for now.” It had been frighteningly easy to hack into the first camera, and from there he found a network of connections. Videos and messages and music were being sent everywhere, all the time. He learned that it was called the ‘internet,’ and it was simple to cut it off from all of the cameras in the area. Some people had found a way to fix it, but when they did that, he just disabled them again. It was hilarious to see their frustrated expressions through their computers.

Of course, then there were the people who saw them when they were fleeing the apartment, and thought it was a good idea to post about it online. He took those posts down as soon as he saw them, but he couldn’t keep it up forever. He would have to sleep sometime.

He loved his mechanical eye. With it being directly connected to his brain, he could connect to whatever machines were in the area. He couldn’t have done any of that without it.

“Even though the cameras are out, we aren't exactly inconspicuous.” Grian said. “And the orange jumpsuits aren’t doing us any favors.”

Xisuma sighed. “I suppose that’s what they’re for.” Doc nodded. The bright color made them easier to spot than they already were.

“What, so we’re stuck? They’ll find us?” Simon’s eyes were wide with fear, and his breathing was getting faster. Jamie turned his head towards her, murmuring to him until he calmed down.

“Not if you come with me.” A new voice. Doc whipped around, his eyes landing on a woman he didn’t recognise. He tensed, preparing to attack her.

Xisuma’s hand rested on his arm. The message was clear. He stepped back, making it known that he wouldn’t attack her until Xisuma told him to, or she tried something. Xisuma stepped forward, planting himself between her and Doc. She relaxed a bit.

“Who are you, and why would we come with you?” Xisuma questioned.

“I’m Mavery. I’m from Convive.”

Xisuma eyed her suspiciously. “Can you prove it?” She dug around in her pockets, pulling out a card. Xisuma took it, examining the writing on it.

Doc leaned over Xisuma’s shoulder to see as well. It certainly looked official. But that didn’t mean anything. “You could have stolen it. Or foraged it.” he growled.

“I didn’t. I don’t know how to prove that to you. But if you stay here and do nothing, PIL will find you. I have a vehicle outside with tinted windows that could get us to safety, but only if we go now. The longer we wait, the closer PIL gets.”

Xisuma thought about it for a moment. He turned to the Hermits, Jamie, and Simon. “I think we’ll have to risk it.”
