Steve comes to Buck in his nightmares.
“I'm with you till the end of the line, remember?” Bucky echoed Steve's own words.
“I won’t, tho.” The boy whispered.
“What?” Buck let out, his breath hinching.
“I won’t be with you till the end of the line, you know that, right?” Steve's voice shifted, cracking his face into a regretful sneer. "I mean, look at yourself, Buck."
Barnes did so, looking down at himself waiting to find his civilian clothes, old and dusty, instead he found black cargos, big military boots, leather, straps, weapons, but more importantly metal.
A blinding pain clawing at his shoulder, the phantom coldness of this foreign object that intrude into his skin, made his chest vibrate with electricity and agony--
“Steve, what’s going on?”
“Life, Buck. The life we deserved.” Steve simply acknowledged. “The one I deserved and the one you deserved.”
Sam wakes him up into sunshine.
“The people in this town are the most welcoming people in the world. They don't care if you wear small T-shirts or if you have six toes or if your mom's your aunt.”
When Sam finally settled next to him, smiling and wrinkling his nose at Bucky’s, he simply felt weightless. -
