The last thing Ray felt was the bullet entering his head. It was an odd feeling, not the same as when he got shot in the stomach. Getting shot in the stomach was weird, the feeling of metal in a place where it wasn’t supposed to be, his intestines feeling sensations not dissimilar to his fingers, sensations they were never supposed to feel. The feeling of touching metal so familiar, yet so in the wrong place. It reminded Ray of the time he stepped on a nail, pain of the flesh intertwined with the undeniable wrongness of this is not supposed to be here. No, getting shot in the head did not feel like getting shot in the guts.
Where Ray dies at the end of The Long Walk and wakes up in a hospital in the modern era.

Ray’s teeth clenched, his boots nudging against the floor as he stood in front of Pete. “Maybe this is home? I mean — Maine, ya know,” Ray shoved his hands in his pockets, "maybe this will be home, man.”
Pete’s eyes crinkled, just the slight uptick of his lips as he nodded along, “Sure, Ray. Maybe this is home.”
And Ray wondered if he’d wake up tomorrow, or the next month, or the next year and Pete would be gone. If Pete can’t be bottled up forever, kept in a jar or on a shelf or in a pocket. If he’s like the passing seasons, home to nowhere and always changing. Yet, the seasons guarantee a return, a promise that with the end of winter, then spring will come. But not Pete. There is no promise that Ray will see him come autumn. When the chapel is finished and the sun begins to set early, maybe Pete will pack up his bags and leave for his next home. That the ache in Ray’s bones can’t be Pete’s home.
Except Ray is not home, not for Pete and not for himself.

Pete knows he's staring—knows he just stopped talking mid conversation to stare too, so it's not exactly like he's being subtle, but he can't help it. The guys gorgeous—about the same height as he is, but bigger in the kind of way that makes Pete salivate; soft, boyish features, red hair and a galaxy of freckles; a cute smile that shows off crooked teeth that Pete wants, no, needs to run his tongue over, and the warmest eyes he's ever seen. Really, the only thing that gives him pause is the fact that he's smiling at Barkovitch at all, but maybe he's just as nice as he looks.
Harkness makes a soft huh sound behind him before he's draping an arm over his shoulders, "you eyein' the guy over there with our Barko?"
Pete smirks, crossing his arms to rest on the table in front of him, "you're goddamn right I am, Richard. You're goddamn right."
