James watched them through half-open lashes, his pupils dilated like an Arctic fox preparing to bounce its unsuspecting prey. He was visibly holding back, keeping his hands to himself to allow Anne some entertainment of her own. But his patience was limited like most things.
"I know just the distraction for our old boy", he exclaimed, his wife humming in approval as he planted a brief kiss on the nape of her neck. James smiled one of those wolfish grins of his, making a shudder run down Francis' spine in cold excitement as his gaze fell back on him.
"Breakfast in bed."

Three pairs of eyes stare back at him from the photograph in his hand, nestled snugly in a bed of wrapping paper and red ribbon. He knows this picture, remembers the three of them gathering around Ann’s little disposable film camera the first day James had decided to introduce her to Francis, one of James’ arms slung around her slim waist and the other hooked around Francis’ shoulders to pull him close.
Something cracks in Francis’ chest, and he thinks it might be his heart.
James turns, leans back over the railing and stares out at the sky. Francis flips the photograph over in his hands— a fruitless attempt to smother the sight of all that ugly want all over him— and catches Ann’s tidy penmanship on the back of it.
Merry Christmas, Frank, it says, in bright red ink. Remember you’re always ours, if you want to be. —Ann
