“Happy birthday, Mi-yeong,” she said before taking a sip. “I miss you.” Celine stared at the whiskey, alcohol mixing with the melting ice cube to make a strange illusion in her glass. She sighed, finishing the rest of her drink in two sips.
Celine groaned as she poured herself another glass.

Heeseung’s hand brushed Sunghoon’s cheek. Rough, work-coarse skin against a soft pale cheek. His thumb caught a rogue strand of sweat curled hair and pushed it from the other boy’s eyes.
Sunghoon’s pupils locked onto Heeseung like he was the only thing that had ever mattered. Brown eyes that looked like the worn wooden flooring of the ranch house and the choir of cicadas singing themselves to death. He’d never known brown eyes could look so blue.
The cross on the porch was hanging on a slant, like God had turned his head.
‘You gotta get out of here Hoon.’ Heeseung spoke, voice cracking from the dust or maybe emotional agony, ‘I’m serious. This dust bowl it-it’s gonna eat you alive. You're too precious for this place. Too precious to me.’
Heeseung was pushing away the only good thing he’d ever held and it hurt.
The sky was a bruised purple, sun barely there, falling low. Darkness rolled across the dirt planes until the place where the world went quiet.
Sunghoon’s voice came out in barely a whisper, slight and frail like a prayer. ‘I could never leave you Hee. I’d be blessed to die next to you in this piece of shit town.’
