This is set when John Oliver was still with The Daily Show, going to play around with ages and dates a bit to make it fit. Everything is going great for John; he got a new apartment and his own show. He has worked towards getting closer to his friends and trying to forget the troubles of his past. As everything comes together, however, there is something, or rather someone, who is working to try and tear him and the people he cares about the most apart.

Plus,” he added, looking back at Sam with a nod of his chin, “You can know a lot about queer identities without having one. I’m not going to lie - Basically all my, like, real-world friends are queer. I’m embedded in that shit, you know? That’s just what the space is like for, uh, guys like me. Leftists my age or whatever. So yes, I dress like my peers, big surprise.”
“Leftists your age, huh?” Sam asked, leaning back and crossing his arms. Hasan admired the bicep that bulged in his arm at the motion. Sam clearly went to the gym, at least once in a while. “Are you saying that us old leftists can’t be, I guess you’d say queer-adjacent, too? I’ve been around the block, you know. When you were still in diapers, even!”
Hasan grinned. Sam clearly trusted him greatly to admit to something so juicy.
