After Castiel's confession, Dean carries a spark of hope telling him this can't be the end. This spark is the strongest weapon for Dean, Sam and Jack in this final war. The enemy is God. Michael had no intention of being gone from heaven for long. He just needed to see, to see humanity so he could understand his father, understand Lucifer’s exile and the eventual apocalypse. So he could understand why his father would tear their family apart for such a flawed creation.
Michael had no flaws, maybe that was why God left. If angels were perfect what need would they have for guidance? Michael just wanted to understand. He was here to understand.

Lucifer was cradling his face and it sent fear through every part of his mind that was still aware. He was speaking gently, but his words were cruel.
“Why do you think Dean didn't kill you?”
“I don't know” Sam answered honestly, because what was the point of lying anymore? He had nothing left to give, he had nothing left to hide. It was cold. So, so cold. Sam hated the way that he pressed more into Lucifer's hands because somehow they were warm, warm despite the cold.

His trail leads him to a book that opens a door to The Library where every soul and humanity is preserved that exists outside time tended by an angel who won't let him read Sam's book. The longer Dean stays, the more scrolls from existence fades, the constellations spin faster and the library collapses. Dean and Cas work together to protect the library..maybe Dean will get a chance to read Sam's book.

Castiel swallowed, closing his eyes against a lance of pain in his chest that had nothing to do with the binding or the sigil. “Yes, you did. And its true, in any case.” Castiel gave him an out, but the words stung. He wasn’t human. Which meant he was – in a hunter’s mind – a creature.
An animal.
Something inside him felt like it was icing over...
