The dim light of the fire makes her look a bit like a ghost. It dances across her expressionless face. The shadows surrounding her make her look even smaller than she is. She’s curled into this tight little ball, knees hugged up to her chest, his coat still draped over her shoulders. It hits him now just how small she is. Too small for this. Too small to be filled with so much hurt and pain. Too small to be covered in blood the way she is.

It only took one little girl with a messy ponytail, ratty-ass Converse sneakers, shitty puns, and a generally annoying personality to get his ass out of the grave he’d buried himself in all those years ago in Texas. One girl who was unwilling to give him up even after he told her ‘she wasn’t his daughter and he sure as hell wasn’t her dad’, failed her by getting stabbed and leaving her to fend for herself, shoved her away when she was trying to save his sorry carcass.
All it took was for her small, shaking, blood covered fingers to curl into his own for Joel to finally see that this girl owned him now. That she had carved his broken heart out of his chest, put all the pieces back together with spit and pure stubbornness, and now carried it around in her delicate, precious, grasping hands. There was no going back for Joel now.
IE: Post Episode 8, Joel finds himself again.

Summary
Once he’s inside the house, safe from her prying eyes, he makes quick work of peeling up the layers over his torso, shivering in the bite of the air. His bottom layer is practically glued to his skin with dried blood, and Joel has to bite down on the collar of his jacket to muffle the pained sounds he can’t quite restrain as he works it free. He’d tried to get a bandage on it last night at one point, when Ellie had dozed off, but in the dim of the fire he hadn’t really been able to see what he was doing. Apparently he’d missed half the wound, sloppily taping it off-center.
The bandage itself was soaked with blood, even more trickling out now.

Joel’s never known Ellie to be so silent.
He really fucking hates it.
She hasn’t said a word since they walked away from that burning building at the resort, has barely let out more than a whimper even though he knows she’s gotta be in just as much, if not more pain than him. Joel can tell by the way she’s walking that her ribs are hurting, by the way her gaze is unfocused that she’s probably got a concussion.
But she just keeps trudging along behind Joel, stepping where he steps, letting him guide her around fallen trees and boulders.
All without a sound.
