Ken watches on the dock as a pair of scared red eyes disappears into the murky depths below. Cementing is a brutal form of execution; the victim’s arms and legs are bound in blocks of cement, and they’re tossed in the ocean. With no means of escaping back up to the surface, they’re allowed the brief mercy of drowning before being pulled right back into consciousness, choking on another gasp of black water until they drown again, and the cycle continues for eternity. The Smiling Dead has done this to others before, usually rival gang members or those foolish enough to try and cross them. But this is the first time Ken’s ever had to do this to one of his own.
Or, Mel's first friend finds out about what she is.

“Well… I came up with a brilliant idea.” Mel grinned impishly, mischievous intentions seeping out of her smile. “I thought… since you are clearly the connoisseur of hot women, I'd just borrow yours!”
“Oooh, so what? Ya found my mags. If ya found em, it isn't the good stuff.” Mud huffed, leaning back in his chair. It was really only a matter of time but that is why, unlike Ken, he had decoy mags hidden in a slightly easier to find spot. He had hid the decoy ones under a crate nearby his sleeping hook which Ken hadn't needed to move in years. Mud wouldn't even be surprised if the decoys had frozen to the icy concrete floor.
“Oh-ho I wouldn't be so sure of that one.” Mel cackled, eyes glinting against the dark of her devious look. “Tell me, does the headline ‘tin can totally dominates’ mean anything to you?”

110%. That small meeting with Mud haunted their every waking thought to the point that productivity had dipped to 110%. Diligence gripped the report with white knuckles and tore it to shreds. The pieces fluttered to the floor around them. They clawed at their metal skull as if the screech of clawed nails would dislodge the green slime ball from their brain.

Ken had always reassured her that she would never bring the end of immortality like the prophecy foretold, but it became harder to believe that after walking through the district each day, hearing the preachers cry their warnings of the beast whose blood flowed black. Mel refused to remove her makeup not out of caution, but out of hatred. Hatred for herself, for her humanity. How could you not hate yourself if you were prophesied to kill everyone you ever knew and loved?
If the Black Hand was so great, then why did it curse her to this fate?
So she told herself it was better to play pretend. After all, wasn’t that what she’d been taught to do for as long as she could remember? Be yourself, but don’t be human. Was there really a difference?

Ken's past had come back to haunt him, because eternity in the Inferno just wasn't enough of a punishment for what he'd done-- or maybe being family with the black-blooded beast instead of slaying them like a sensible person would was just a habit of his. Honestly, he thought Mud would be the last, but it was clear that his contradicting consciousness meant nothing to the prophecy.
