“Me neither,” John purrs, and chuckles at George’s rude hand gesture as the two Evertonians take their leave.
Ringo’s not chuckling. He’s busy wiping his pants with napkins, glaring at John all the while. “The fuck was that all about?” he demands.
That means it’s game on, John thinks, picturing Paul McCartney’s face in his mind and imagining how pretty it’s gonna look in defeat.He can’t wait for the Merseyside Derby.

I realized something as I was listening to "Now and Then." We use the phrase to mean something that is occasional or once in a while, but it really doesn't mean that at all.
Now...We live in "now." Now is constant, it is always present. We live in it. There is the second after and the second before, but now is now.
And Then...what comes next. It's continuous, it goes on forever.
Then...used to talk about the past. But the past is simply made of endless moments that were once nows.
Now and Then really means all of the time. So...
When John sings that he misses Paul now and then, he's saying that he misses Paul all of the time.
When John sings now and then I want you to be there for me, he's saying he wants Paul there all of the time.
When John sings now and then I love you, he's telling Paul he loves him all of the time.
When John told Paul to think of me now and then, he was telling Paul to think of him all of the time.

John Lennon, busy scraping by while working at a record shop (one he happened to be rather fond of), felt like he was so, so close to finally making a break in the music industry with his closest lad - Paul McCartney. Of course, there were others he could credit here and there, but it was him and Paul that were the ones busying themselves with songwriting.
They were the ones spending every feasible, waking moment together just to correct one another on the smallest detail of a lyric.
They were the ones pressing their knees together, so close their breaths mixed as they tuned their instruments by ear.
They were the reason John felt even slightly capable of seeing a possible future ahead of him while everything behind him couldn't get shaken off.
