‘Well, we’re not doing any good just sitting around here. We could use another job.’
‘What and you think this is our kind of gig? It's just a messed up kid man.’
Sam clicked on the profile and cleared his throat. ‘I thought so too, but listen to this.'

‘So. Where were they all last seen?’
Sam rummaged through some hastily written notes. ‘ Uh, Jackson and Chase were spotted by a civilian at a marina on Montauk Lake…6 days ago.’
‘A couple days' drive. Meet Baby outside in an hour?’ Dean asked, standing up and brushing non-existent dust from his jeans.
Sam blinked. ‘Oh. You wanna leave like now? Alright, let’s go then.’ He watched Dean walk away and sighed. The man was struggling. Between Castiel’s absence, and a lack of hunting, he’d been practically twitching for the last two weeks. Hopefully a case would bring him back, especially this one. If there were two things that Dean excelled at, they were hunting, and becoming a temporary father figure to wayward kids. -

Basically started to write this before watching season 7 and just continued for fun. dean is suffering from dreams and hallucinations of Castiel after disappearing into a lake and refuses to admit he's dead he wakes up one night and realizes that this is going to be harder to ignore than he thought. hope you enjoy!

Summary
[This fic takes place after Leviathan!Cas when tensions are high and Cas's guilt is thick. Cas appears in Dean's motel room, injured after an altercation with the angels. Dean plays nursemaid.]
“Uh, Cas,” Dean cleared his throat. "How come I can still see your wings? I usually never see them for more than a couple’a seconds at a time.” Dean peered over Cas’s shoulder, letting the washcloth lag over his collarbone as curiosity got the better of him.
Cas took in a sharp breath and retreated just slightly from Dean’s proximity. “I seem to be having trouble stowing them away entirely. My apologies, they became slightly damaged in the altercation.”
Dean furrowed his brow. “What do you mean, ‘entirely?’”
“What you see is only their shadow; not their physical form. I keep them in a different plane of existence, but when they need tending to it becomes… more difficult to keep them hidden.” Cas’s body language was steely, as usual, and hard to read.
“You mean what I’ve been seeing is just some heavenly jacked-up angel-juice projection? You have actual, physical wings, like with feathers and crap?” Dean raised his eyebrows in amazement, but Cas seemed tense.

It was over, and Dean didn’t even remember how he fought for it, how he tore his angel free from the monster occupying his destructing body. Castiel had lived for a few short years after that. He had been so weak, he was hardly promised even months. The Leviathan had destroyed his grace, his wings crushed and torn down to the last downy feather, and what stared out of those gorgeous blue eyes was no longer angelic, no longer ethereal, no longer beautiful. Castiel had become depressingly human before his spirit eventually gave out, not from lack of trying on his part. He was simply too tired, stretched too thin. He was surrendering the body to someone else now, someone who deserved a second chance at life just as he had.
