One day, Quackity joins him and recognises that Mariana’s kid goes to his school and Slime makes Quackity tell him stuff about the “mysterious” Mariana, causing Slime to want to interact with Mariana even more.

Two months. Sixty-two days of hotel rooms, facetime calls, missing bedtime stories and daylight disasters. Tour had been everything Wilbur had ever wanted. Sold-out shows, incredible crowds, cities straight out of dreams.
But that didn't stop the heartache.
Summer has just begun, and finally he's back on the familiar streets of his city, yearning for the time he'd spend with his husband and daughters. The morning coffees shared in comfortable silence, interminable dramatic dollhouse scenes, sleepy kisses that taste like toothpaste, the weight of someone he loves curled against his chest in the dark.
Living what most people would call a "boring life"

Quackity’s cheeks are flushed red now, probably from the winter air biting at his face. He should have brought him a scarf or something.
Quackity stares at Cellbit for a moment, coffee-dark eyes wide with something he can’t place. He holds his gaze, eyebrows raised as if to say, what do you want? Quackity’s eyes dart away, and he clears his throat, an awkward cough breaking the silence. “Thanks.”

In all of her two years of working at Quesadilla Coffee, this was the one time Mariana could not go up to someone and say “Holá, what can I get for you?” Because what Mariana wanted him to get was her number, and that was insane because they hadn’t even spoken a single word to each other. Speaking of single, he might not be.
With all of these things in mind, it was probably a bad idea for Mariana to try anything at all. But the pretty customer was still a customer, and Mariana was still the barista on shift, so she was contractually obligated to talk to this man and take his order.
Mariana wasn’t sure whether to feel grateful or spiteful that she was getting paid for this.

Then, a series of unfortunate events occur.
Quackity watches in horror as the head turns.
With a yelp, he jumps back, hands raised defensively to protect his face. The pear sized bird is happy to flee, wings flapping as it jumps from the cage and charges towards Quackity’s head.
“Wilbur!” Quackity shouts, ducking down and arms raised overhead. The bird lands a few feet away, skittishly skidding across the wooden floor. Poor thing can’t get a grip, head bobbing as it tries to run out of view. “Wilbur get the fuck down here! Why is there a fuckin’ bird in our tree!”

“How are you, Wilbur? Hanging in there?”
“Doing as good as I can, Charlie. I just need to check her in,” Wilbur replied, patting the soft curls on top of his daughter’s head. Tallulah bounced on the balls of her feet, clawed hands grabbing the edge of the table.
“I’m going to kindargerden Uncle Slime!” Tallulah exclaimed, ripping the vinyl tablecloth as her nails dug in.
“Kin-ter-gar-ten, Tallulah. Make sure to slow your words,” Wilbur replied back, accepting the lanyard from Charlie. He ignored the slightly green, sticky residue left by his hands. Tallulah puffed her cheeks, crossing her arms.
“I’m only 5 years old, give me a break,” Tallulah huffed, turning slightly away. Wilbur resisted rubbing his temples, opening his mouth to reply, but Charlie beat him to it.
“Wow! Five years old! I don’t think I can count that high, can you show me with your fingers?” Charlie exclaimed, leaning over the table. Tallulah brightened spinning as she held up a chubby hand with all five fingers. Charlie clapped, giving another ‘wow!’

It’s January.
It’s January, a week after the holiday season ended. After champagne glasses clinked and drunk kisses were shared, a multicolored oversized duck-shaped chandelier lowered on a pole to ring in the change of a four-digit number. Classed had resumed mere days ago and here Quackity sits at the side of a twin bed waiting for the thermometer to chime to determine the damage. The shrill beeping cuts through the silence. Ignoring the sniffles to stare at the high number with disdain, he methodically administers two doses of medication to the half- asleep victims before crossing the room to switch off the light and closing the door with a soft click.
He feels like the duck really dropped the ball here.

Wilbur thinks he’ll do anything for this man. Travel to the ends of the earth. Rob this weird ass convenience store. Write a million cringy love songs until he manages to encapsulate how Quackity makes him feel. Perhaps that’s a bit dramatic for someone he’s spent less than forty-eight hours with in person, but Wilbur can’t deny how he feels. The stars will be in the palm of his hand, if Quackity is so willing.
Reaching out, Wilbur swipes his thumb above Quackity’s lips, removing a tiny bit of cheese. His date’s face blooms a bright cherry, and Wilbur offers a shrug of feigned nonchalance. “I’m down.”
I’m down, Wilbur thinks as they walk hand in hand once more in the crisp of night. I’m down so bad.

Summary
Grief is a funny thing. The heavy, tangled up knot that you don't remember swallowing. Something dark and bitter that climbs back up your throat every so often just to remind you that it's there. Some people got good at biting it back. Some people got to wash it down with lemonade and laughter and friends to fall back on. Some even learned how to let it come. To let the knot past their lips and untie it. Some people were only passing companions with grief, but others were worse.
Quackity and Charlie were worse.
Over a year since his daughter died and Quackity was regretting his career choices. All the bitterness he brought with him to school now. All the misdirected anger towards parents; mornings drowning the smell of alcohol in gum and cologne. He was a sorry sight, as was Charlie. Charlie, who was living in Quackity's basement because he couldn't face his husband (or himself). Charlie, who hadn't managed a job since paying for their kids' funerals. Charlie, who was probably going to kill himself one of these days if they weren't careful. So, yeah. Some people were worse.
Enter a new school year, hot parents, and a very determined husband trying to teach these two that grief doesn't have to be forever.

When she hugged him and gave him a flower, his heart started beating faster. Additionally, when they painted each other, Dapper's heart started beating quickly again when he saw the painting she made of him. However, it is not clear if Tallulah feels the same way about Dapper. They could just be good friends.
