In ogni vicenda ci sono dei momenti cruciali, decisioni e azioni che nel tempo di un battito di ciglia possono condurre in una direzione piuttosto che in un’altra. A volte sono scelte piccole, quasi insignificanti, ma in grado di cambiare il destino di molteplici vite.
Da qualche parte c’è una linea temporale in cui le strade di Viktor e Jayce non si sono mai separate, dove non è stato solo l’affetto a tenerli uniti, ma molto di più. In una Piltover che ha cancellato i mostri di Zaun non con la forza, ma nel riconoscimento di ogni sbaglio commesso, la popolazione prospera felice senza più l’opprimente peso delle distinzioni sociali. Nulla ha frenato il progresso scientifico tramite l’utilizzo dell’Arcane, Viktor non ha avuto bisogno di nascondere nulla al suo partner, che lo ha aiutato ad utilizzare l’Hexcore per guarire da quella malattia che lo stava divorando. “Am I interrupting?” A voice cuts through the air.
Jayce spins around, hand still to his chest. At first he doesn’t see anyone, and then, following the sound of a small puff of exertion, notices the thin figure who’s just slumped back against the wall, cast in the overhanging shadow of the roofline.
“No.” Jayce hears the defensiveness in his own voice. Winces at his failure to be casual. “No, um… it’s fine.”
“You don’t look fine,” says the figure against the wall, tilting his head to the side.
“Thanks,” Jayce laughs humourlessly, stepping forward. The figure against the wall, now Jayce can see him a little better, looks kind of like a puppet whose strings have been cut, folding in on himself, deflated. “Neither do you.”
“Mm, very perceptive,” he holds up a finger, then returns his hand to where it was previously wrapped around his side, as though he’s holding himself together. “That is, in fact, because I am not.”

Jayce meets Viktor post-panic attack in the beer garden of the bar near campus. Viktor invites him back to his dorm. But despite their instant attraction, science takes precedence.

Eight days before Halloween, Jayce and Viktor are in their lab, doing science, and all is as it should be. At least, that is, until Dmitri (the nerve!) shows up, and asks Viktor to his fancy dress party.
Jayce expects him to say no, but in a plot twist, Viktor says yes, although he does first make sure that the rest of his dorm are also invited. Seeing this take place right in front of him leads Jayce to an epiphany, and he realises how he really feels about Viktor.“Vi,” he begins, ready for her world to be rocked as much as his has just been, “I’m in love with Viktor!”
Vi visibly relaxes. “Oh, is that all? Yeah, we know, we've been waiting for you to notice.”
For the second time in half an hour, Jayce’s jaw drops open in astonishment. “Huh?”There's only one way to deal with this revelation, and that is to come up with a Halloween costume so amazing that it sweeps Viktor off his feet, and into his arms.
Viktor has been in love with Jayce forever, but a man can only yearn for so long. Now, though, he has a plan, to find an outfit so spookily sexy that it will either sweep Jayce off his feet, or he'll know that there is no hope for his feelings ever to be returned.

This fic was originally drafted as a 35k-word treatment on season 2 of Arcane. It has since been converted to standard prose, with each of 9 "TV episodes" being split into three chapters apiece. While this story shares some of the same bones as the official season 2, several major changes have been made in order to streamline and concretize its themes. Mel remains a politician in Piltover; Vi gets a lot more autonomy; the Firelights matter again; Isha doesn't exist 💔; the Multiverse is not a thing, but the Void is; the chem-barons don't get lost infighting; and Jinx fully commits to the war-path she thinks Silco wanted.
