Summary
Garak continues the process of recovery from the consequences of the failure of his neural implant - and of dependence upon the narcotic drug triptacederine - with the help of Doctor Bashir, Counselor Telnorri, and Nurses Heyns, Patel, and Jabara - and with the support of Keiko O'Brien. He is trying to regain his independence - though the idea is both important and frightening. And, he is attempting to return to his profession on a full-time basis - while he and Professor O'Brien continue their work on the station's new Arboretum.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bashir continues to try to be a good friend to Garak, not merely a doctor; Keiko tries to find a balance between encouraging Garak to occupy himself with his hobbies while clarifying that she doesn't expect him to accomplish everything all at once; and Counselor Telnorri strives to adapt to the new role of counselor-to-someone-who-doesn't-truly-want-counseling – and who is no longer required to participate in mandatory counseling sessions.

Summary
Act I of III complete
In the labyrinth of Cardassian power, survival is not enough.
Julian Bashir fled the Federation under the shadow of treason, only to land in the hands of the Obsidian Order. Under the watchful eye of Enabran Tain and his most loyal operative, Elim Garak, Julian must prove his worth—or be discarded.
But loyalty is a weapon as much as a virtue, and Garak is as much interrogator as savior. Cardassia demands obedience, and Julian—brilliant, fragile, burning with defiance—was never meant to last.
But loyalty on Cardassia is a weapon as much as a virtue, and Garak is as much interrogator as savior. As Julian fights to retain his humanity, the truths he uncovers may cost him the very thing he’s struggling to keep.
In the labyrinth of Cardassian intrigue, survival is only the beginning. To endure, Julian must decide: is he willing to become the monster they expect—or something far worse?

Summary
As they sit down to their meal, Julian clears his throat.
“I thought you might appreciate a talk in a more private location.”
“Oh?” says Garak, and he leans forward across the table. “Are your thoughts on The Thorns of Ses'erakh so scandalous that you would deprive the replimat of them?”
“No,” Julian says, dry. “It was boring, repetitive, and almost repulsed at the idea of individual personhood, and I’ll be glad enough to repeat that opinion to anyone who asks.”
“Setting aside your cruel condemnation of a seminal work of Cardassian literature,” Garak says, “what, then, did you wish to discuss?”
“While you were ill,” Julian says, and Garak groans.-------
Several weeks after the events of "The Wire," Julian tells Garak some of what he learned. -

Summary
Whisper a dangerous secret to someone you care about.... Now they have the power to destroy you.....But they won't.... This is what love is.
To desire the most alien of aliens is not looked upon favorably by humans. To long for tentacles and scales and excessive amounts of eyes and razor tipped teeth is seen as a demeaning disgusting fetish.(Though interestingly enough, not usually by the creatures who are the focus of these desires.)
So Julian ignores his preferences, and carefully avoids involving himself with anyone a bit too alien. Even the enigmatic and ever so beautifuly scaled, and rigged, and clawed Cardassian who was obviously hitting on him. Until he sees Garak in a very inhuman and slightly compromising state, and for the first time in his life let's himself have a taste of the strange wonders he's denied himself. What follows is confusion and philosophy and misunderstandings, and secrets and terrible Cardassian epics, and questioning his entire life....well maybe not his entire life, but at least a good 40% of it.
Meanwhile, Garak is planning their enjoinment, and debating if he's fallen quite far enough in his life to have the reception at Quark's.

Summary
Garak wakes up after the implant incident alive against all odds and still suffering some of the side effects of withdrawal. Hopefully he won’t have some kind of manic episode, jump to any wild conclusions, or do anything weird to Doctor Bashir.
A slight canon divergence centred around the events of The Wire

“It’s ready,” Kim said, “I can activate him whenever you want, captain.”
“Go ahead,” Boimler said, his expression openly curious.
Garak watched, arms folded, as the EMH blipped into existence — and immediately went completely stiff.
It was Julian Bashir.
“Please state the nature of the medical emer- oh my god.” It had noticed Garak, and its eyes widened. “Garak?“ It looked him up and down, apparently just now noticing the Starfleet uniform. “Er, but you’re not—“
“Whatever Garak you knew, I’m not him,” Garak said.

Summary
It has been a terrible day. Finding what looks like a fungal infection on the underside of one of the plants in the Arboretum does not improve things. Yet perhaps things are not so bad as they seem.
