    Summary

“‘So, what am I s’posed to look out for? Sinners? Signs and wonders? The devil themself, lurkin’ ’round the corner to lure me into a life’a degeneracy?’

The expression of the stranger in white lights up like Wolfwood has presented him with the most wondrous gift.

‘Very glad you asked. Angels, sir! Real life angels! Well, you’re most likely to know them under the colloquial term Plant, but that is so... technical, don’t you think? Unbearably plain. It is divinity made flesh we are talking about, after all!’”

In which some people worship Plants as angels of salvation and Nicholas D. Wolfwood comes to regret not making this particular cult his problem sooner rather than never.

    Summary

His blood feels like ice in his veins.

Instinctually, he edges closer to Meryl’s side. He doesn’t want to fully shield her, as though she can’t defend herself, but the urge is there. “Spare her,” he says, because it’s the first thing that comes to mind. “Please. She wasn’t the one to shoot you. She—”

When rustlers threaten the sanctity of Thompson Farms three years after everything, Vash takes a bullet to protect Meryl. His body, however, isn't what it used to be. The path to recovery is slow and painful, and Vash is left to figure out what his mortality means to his companions, and to him.

    Summary

Turns out—constantly being on the run through the desert heat with little water to go around, little food, no rest, people trying to kill and collect a bounty on you, on top of healing ailing plants—isn’t a good idea. Who’d ‘a thunk?

    -or-

Vash falls sick in the middle of the desert and Wolfwood's there to catch him.

    Summary

The thug crumples. Vash lets out a whistle through his teeth, remorseful. He’s going to have a hell of a concussion later on. But that’s what he gets for shooting up a hospital. You live and you learn, right? Karma is a thing. Or whatever they say. Man, Vash has gotten cynical. He needs to start spending less time with Wolfwood.

Speaking of Wolfwood, the sound of gunfire from upstairs—well, it doesn’t sound entirely one sided. He must be up there. But if the attack has continued for this long, he’s probably in trouble. Checking that his gun is fully loaded, and that his safety is off on both Peacemaker and his arm prosthetic, he starts to mount the stairs once more.

From above: an explosive clattering noise. Not quite like the sound of dynamite, perhaps like a piece of furniture collapsed, a filing cabinet? This is a hospital, after all. A chorus of screams—children’s—and then one that stands out from the rest, not just because it’s a different pitch, but because Vash has never heard it before; that is, not in that way.

    ---

With Vash still recovering from his grief over July, Wolfwood goes on a mission solo and gets in over his head.

He didn't recognize all the signs that his body was telling him to slow down, until one hot afternoon playing with the kids, a day after rebuilding the orphanage. Vash supposes all the power he used up would someday come back to bite him in the ass.

    Or, Vash gets a fever.

    Summary

    Vash is pinned down.

He should never have let it get this far, he'd let his guard down too much, snuck away from Wolfwood so he wouldn't have to contend with that look he gives him when Vash drinks too much.

He shouldn't have drunk so much.

He could get away, could flip the man pinning him down into the dirty, broken glass-riddled alleyway, but the gun nudging against his temple gives him pause. He's not sure he's faster than this man's trigger finger, the man's breath coming hot and nauseating against the back of his neck.

He could get away though. Probably. If he could just make his limbs move. It's happened before, his mind and his body unsynced to the point where his limbs feel heavy and sluggish. He thinks maybe the man drugged his drink or maybe that's just wishful thinking, his own brain concocting a world where he isn't to blame for this.

    Summary

It's been happening more often lately. Some days are worse than others, where his joints throb and all the scars and metal sear with pain and pull his skin taut. His body is not what it used to be. The aches and pains weighing him down remind him that he needs to be careful, needs to move a little slower. Maybe this is what getting old feels like.

Or, Vash grapples with his body slowing down.

Vash knows childbirth was the most excruciating experience one could go through. He also knows he's not going to have a typical human childbirth experience, if the occasional feathers sprouting from his skin due to haywire hormones is anything to go by.

    Summary

"Spikey?" Wolfwood kneels before Vash to tap his face. He gets no reaction from the other man. "Vash—hey." He shakes Vash to wake him up, but to no avail. That's when he notices a red stain on Vash's side, darker than his coat, and a bullet hole. Wolfwood curses and lifts Vash into his arms to lay him on the bed, quickly unfastening the rows of buttons on Vash's coat to tend to the wound. His movements stop when he sees more than just a bullet wound under Vash's coat.

    There's a suspicious bump on Vash's abdomen.

Or, When Vash gets hurt and passes out, Wolfwood finds a little surprise.

Wolfwood crosses his arms. "Y'know you don't have to take those anymore, right?"

    "I know."

Wolfwood sighs. "At least try to wean off them," he grumbles. He doesn't want to start an argument while they've got stuff to do.

Vash looks off to the side, gazing at the bottle of pills, lost in thought as he considers the idea. "I'll think about it."

Or, Vash struggles to stop taking suppressants, leaving Wolfwood frustrated.

    Summary

“You did say that I could do whatever I wanted.”

Well, yeah, Vash said that, but he was being hyperbolic. Realistically, he’d wait for Lila-Jane to be out of harm’s reach, get Dr. Emphasis to come in here, and jump him. The guy doesn’t look all that strong. Even with a headache, Vash is pretty sure he could body him. No point in saying that though. There’s a chance Dr. Emphasis already pieced as much together—hence the smug smile on his face—but even if he didn’t, if Vash is faced with the option…

“I’d rather you let her go,” Vash says quietly. “Whatever you want with me, I’m sure she has nothing to do with it.”

“Are you so sure?” Dr. Emphasis raises an eyebrow. “Nonetheless, you know now the choices that I’m offering you. I can make one guarantee to you right now, however. I’ll only keep you both here for a seven days—no longer than a week. I have no intention of killing either of you. I have seven tests I would like you both to indulge me by participating in… and then I’ll let you go. Does that sound agreeable?”

Vash is captured by a scientist who wants to see how far he'll bend until he breaks.

    Summary

He looked down, pleading for release, and saw that the angel was ogling him with a thousand coruscate eyes like he was the loveliest thing in all of creation.

Perhaps, he was. Not too long ago he was sick and bleeding and confined to bed. And he hated himself. He took the world’s punishment on his shoulders. His mind had become a prison where he recoiled from anybody’s love, not that anybody ever offered it.

Now he’s never felt so vibrant, so wanted, so alive. Let me serve you, he wanted to tell the Lord, but the Lord had already decided. He’d let him. Oh, He’d let him.

    He had already been chosen.

    Summary

Vash is practically listless in the sidecar by the time Wolfwood pulls up in front of an inn. Wolfwood’s eyes narrow as he sizes up his companion, lips puckering, but Vash doesn’t even stir. Nor does he stir when Wolfwood disappears into the building to book them a room, or even when Wolfwood gets back, still in the exact same position as he was before as Wolfwood walks up to him.

Brow creasing, Wolfwood reaches for his shoulder to shake him awake, but the moment Wolfwood’s fingers graze Vash’s neck—

“Shit,” Wolfwood hisses, yanking his hand back. “Tongari, you’re burning up.”

Vash barely reacts to the information, his eyelids fluttering. He gives a faint groan by way of response, after a moment, and Wolfwood lets out another curse. He had to have been feeling this all long; that he’s so out of it can only mean that it’s gotten so bad that he can no longer hide it. Fucking moron. And what is there for Wolfwood to do about it now?

    ---

Vash comes down with a bug just weeks out from their final destination.

    Summary

“Wolfwood,” Vash whispers. He shakes his head without taking his gaze off of Andy, who’s dropped his head. “It’s fine.”

Wolfwood shuts his mouth, though he doesn’t look happy about it. Vash isn’t sure he could ask for that anyway. When Vash rises to his feet, Andy lifts his face again, tears streaming off his cheeks. He’s grimacing, bared lips and clenched teeth, and for all the fury in his expression, it’s obvious what he’s feeling first and foremost is the pain.

Even if it wasn’t obvious, Vash knows exactly how he feels—has suffered through the same emotion every day for the past one hundred and fifty years, so he’d be able to identify it regardless.

“You killed my mom,” Andy whispers.

    ---

Vash and Wolfwood get involved in a feud that has nothing to do with them, as they always do. Lives are saved, but not all of them, and a child ends up orphaned, leaving Vash grappling with both his guilt and the remembered grief of when it happened to him.

    Summary

Another silence. Millie hears his footsteps retreating, coming to a stop when they’re a certain distance away, though like this, Millie has no way of telling. He does speak again after a pause, voice distinctly further away now, but still audible.

“What I want isn’t to speak with Vash the Stampede,” the man says. “I intend to kill him.”

    “You—”

“Quiet! You couldn’t understand,” he snaps. “That man—that monster—took everything from me—my home, my family… He would have blown me to bits if he’d had the opportunity! The least he can do is answer with his life, and yet he refuses any kind of justice! I won’t stand for it any longer!”

His home, his family… Millie swallows as realisation dawns. “You’re from July.”

    ---

A scary encounter with a stranger leads the gang to hit the road a little earlier than planned, but it turns out the man's vendetta is a little more personal than any of them are expecting -- and Millie is caught in the crossfire.

    Summary

Wolfwood, despite being a man of the cloth, is not one to grovel or beg. He prays, yes, but even that’s a rare occasion for him. Of course it would be his charge, the aptly named ‘humanoid typhoon’, that would properly bring him to his knees. Vash is tied up in front of him, a gag in his mouth and harsh, biting rope around his wrists.

The fight he’d put up as the hunters grabbed him was weak, nowhere near the strength Wolfwood knows Vash is capable of. Probably because Vash was worried about hurting them. He is an idiot, in Wolfwood’s opinion.

The fight he’d put up was much, much fiercer. He scratched and punched and kicked, anything but pulling out the Punisher, because, whether he likes it or not, he loves Vash and can’t bear his disappointment. So he ends up on the ground, in the end. Not bound, but being held down by someone probably three times his size in every way but height.

    Summary

It becomes quickly apparent that Vash can’t hold himself up. He tries, very valiantly, Wolfwood would never say, but he just can’t do it. Whether it’s the pain, or the bullet in his foot, or that bullet in his back actually hit something important is unclear, but it doesn’t really matter.

Wolfwood is half-dragging him, ignoring the heavy, hot breath against his neck as he does. Vash pants like a dog, and he’s sweating like one too.

“Almost there,” Wolfwood mumbles, absently, hitching his arm tighter around Vash’s waist. They’ve never touched like this before, even if Wolfwood has thought about it. He’s ashamed, and he would never admit this, of how flustered the contact really makes him. “We’re almost there.” Almost to Angelina. Vash is still bleeding, and injured, but they really shouldn’t stick around here. They can stop in the next town.
