Like vampires need blood to live, familiars need magic.
Technically speaking, a familiar could live without a witch (known as witchless or stray familiars), they would just need to find another magic creature willing to give them magic or buy magic bags. But Wooyoung is not willing to let anyone know he’s a familiar and with this economy, only rich people can afford magic bags. So he had to get creative when his personal quest to be a “witchless familiar that everyone thinks is human but not starve to death” started.

He walked around to where the gates were shackled shut, lingering there for a moment. He walked back around to the boys and crouched by the fence. A tiger came up, rubbing its body along it, and then it turned, going back. It nuzzled its head against it. Mingi put his hand against the chain link fence, and the cat licked it twice. Mingi smiled. He slipped two fingers through, scratching its head.
Chan watched closely with a small smile, and Changbin also eyed the boy in amazement. He had never seen anyone like Mingi; no human had ever had a connection with animals like this—it made Changbin think that the boy couldn't be human, but he was.
He was a normal teenage boy, attracting animals who saw a loving aura and goodness in him.
Strange... Changbin thought.

Hongjoong notices the slightly masculine features now that they were face to face, but that didn't do anything to dampen the stranger's beauty. In fact, Hongjoong is even more intrigued by him. Him, who has been blessed by Aphrodite herself. Like a painting that's come to live after its artist spilled their entire soul out onto the canvas, a gift from the gods utterly touched by the sheer beauty possessed.
They stare at each other, and Hongjoong wonders if the stranger found him as interesting as Hongjoong did him. Hating the awkwardness, Hongjoong manages to smile, breathing out a small greeting. He didn't expect the stranger's eyes to go round in panic, and before he knew it, the stranger all but runs away, disappearing from sight.
