Obi knew that a blizzard would do next to nothing to stop the drunk idiots of the tavern in his village. He’d moved to a portion of the forest close to the edge of the town, knowing few would want to wander too near the haunted river flowing around his property. It was one of the few things that the population could be counted on to pay attention to – most children were taught that the woman living in the water would steal them if they wandered during the treacherous spring months, or throw them down the mountainside where the waters plunged hundreds of feet to the lake below.
Winter months were a bit fickle, thawing rainstorms and snap freezes fighting back and forth until one or the other ultimately won out for a few weeks. It wasn’t impossible to find a lost soul deep in snowbanks as it thawed and released them from the icy grasp.
“Help!” A whisper of a scream buffeted his cabin’s wall from upwind. Obi was bundled down for the night, his insulated underthings the only part of his outfit left on for the night. She had been begging for an hour now, the same voice that had followed him for months since he’d built his home. He took a longer pull from his whiskey and swirled it around as he considered.

There is something about Kamisato Ayaka that is frozen. It is not her demeanour, for that is a lovely one indeed, nor is it her manners, for they are excellent. There’s just something slightly cold about the way her blue hair shines in the morning sun, like light refracting off ice. It awes people but also tells them: stay away, danger is near.
Yoimiya has never been very good at listening to those instincts. She grew up around fireworks, explosions of great magnitude called beautiful, and that fire, that liveliness, has seeped into her bones. This is just who she is now, a person made out of fleeting desires and everlasting memories, as bright and in-the-moment as beautiful fireworks herself.
So when she sees the Shirasagi Himegimi politely waiting for her in front of the shop as she comes in, she can’t help but smile. "Come in, come in! I’ll just help the kids get their fireworks, and I’ll be right with you. I owe them some sparklers as it happens to be!"
