Ever since he was a child, Atsumu knew fate liked laughing in his face. From having an annoying twin to being hated by people who didn’t even try to get on his level in volleyball, he thought he was ready for anything.
What he didn’t expect however was to be thrown into the world of heats and ruts as the one secondary gender which had neither.
Or, when Miya Atsumu thought life couldn’t get worse, but then he presented as a beta.

Bookmarker's Notes
The a/b/o setting here chose to focus on the place of betas as a gender "no longer needed". By setting discrimination and status in a society through an arbitrary functional mindset, the author explores ways of carving your own place in undervalued aspects yet highly beneficial for social peace and harmony.
The world building is highly qualitative, as the way familial rejection and social rejection works by building overtime to destroy one's self estime to the point of self neglect and mental health issues. The author uses the a/b/o framework to explore "pack dynamics" and found family in a very interesting way, as a magnifying way of showing how social support essential and how family is not defined by blood but rather earned.
The way the slow burn is set is so good on a literary perspective; but moreover it also allows the author to devellop how romance with the Good Alpha is not the only key to liberation, another good exploration of this common trope! Instead, healing and recovery, as a process still ongoing, happens before love, in finding this strong support system. The story hints to accepting love and one's identity outside this "pack", which I hope I have the chance to read.
I strongly recommend reading this one both for entertainment
—
and to be a nerd about omegaverse. The construction of coming to term with one's identity—
finding one's place and community where one can truly live when seen as deviant—
and liberation through community (before the romance!) is an added highly appreciated plot. This gender world-building kind-of mirror interwoven dynamics both of heterosexism and lgbti+phobia, although distorted and played around.Worth reading even if it were to never be finished. I will never stop advising for people to read it.

Summary
Olivia Idlewind and Florence Stone already have everything they need in each other. Unfortunately, being debutantes in London society comes with a caveat: you're supposed to get married. Their scheme is to find an Alpha who doesn't mind that their wife comes with an extra tag-along. As their plans tumble into motion, they begin to question themselves and their relationship--can a dashing Alpha come between them?
Alex Straffton's biggest fear is turning into her philandering father. Worried constantly that unfaithfulness is in her very blood, she flees her father's country of Italy and takes her mother's maiden name to attempt to capture a mild little English wife who will keep her grounded. Unfortunately for all of Alex's plans and moral rigidity, she unwittingly becomes the target of a plot to capture her into a trio of trouble! Beguiled by a daring honey-haired temptress, Florence Stone, and tripping over herself at the very sight of her Beta "friend", Alex is beginning to wonder--is it worth fighting the devil in your blood?

Bookmarker's Notes
This fanfic was cited in: Martin, Lexi. I Am the Alpha and the Omega: Transfem narratives in omegaverse femslash. The Undergraduate Journal of Sexual Diversity Studies, 66, 2022. Link available in the description.
This work is a femslash set in victorian omegaverse world. In this, most men are alphas and most women are omega. Standing in between, betas have an ambiguous relationship. They explore the romance between three women of the three different genders, all three navigating this world with their own complicated relationship to sexuality and identity, as they have unusual (deviant, one could say) places in this world. None of them are "subservient and meek" tho it is to be expected of the omega but she is said to be a "little devil", obstinate and free, and expected as a woman as well, so a woman being an alpha puts her apart as well.
As M. Popova pointed out in her article on a/b/o ('Dogfuck Rapeworld' available link in the intro), often slash omegaverse reverts the complexity of 5 genders back to 2, alpha/omega. However here, all genders have different places and all affect their place. It is different to be a woman omega and a woman alpha. To have a relationship between women without an alpha is also a complicated one here, and the hierarchy between w/m is complicated by the ones between a/b/o and their respective roles in this victorian society.
It was extremely interesting to see in which ways they lived outside of their assigned roles; the alpha pointing out how her being an alpha doesn't make her gain more status, in fact she is seen as breaching her status of a woman by being an alpha, punished both time for being gender non conforming in both ways. She has also a preference with girls and even worse, betas. The other two girls not being wed, without an alpha and loving each other as women and satisfied with what they have, wish to secure their position without compromise to their love; they find in the alpha a way to secure their place in the world and their love—even though, we discover how they could've revealed their sexuality without fear, showing how the rules of their society are making them live in secrecy. The alpha also finds a way to live her life fulfilled, not having to live her life as less than she is.
As they challenge what is expected of them before and after, they continue to carve their own path in finding in their couple a way to protect each other, while in secrecy but with the acceptance and blessing of the people around them, complicit in helping them live a happy life. This resonates with reality as ways to survive and love in harsh divisions where stepping outside of the norm can have you excluded—with this support both romantic, platonic and familial.
The setting allows to portray multiple gender experiences about being a woman and a lesbian, from gender non conformity and shunned desires, to virginity and purety demanded from them. Ultimately, this is the ultimate lesbian experience around fierce feminity (omega), and as Martin Lexi points out, analogy with transfem experiences, but also resonating with butch experiences and other gnc lesbians (alpha), and finding a place between dynamics from which people expect you to be excluded (betas). All of them loving each other as women and their dynamic, not despite any of these but as them whole.
