Naruto, after almost four years spent mostly on the streets by that point, had been in awe when Sarutobi, the great and wise Monkey King himself, had descended from his perch and whisked him away into the deep woods one chilly spring morning.
At the time Naruto had taken that as an act of kindness, as a rescue of sorts from the cruelty and hunger that dogged his every step.
But now, years later, Naruto knows better.
What Sarutobi had done to him, the gift Naruto had been given, had been just short of exile.
Had been, in Naruto’s opinion, a far crueler thing to do.
