“Let me just run home to get you some dark oak,” Avid said, and his breath stuttered for a moment as he processed the words. Home. He’d called it home. Doovid, the person he’d been making a trade deal with, didn’t seem to notice the word at all, or, if he did, he didn’t take any notice of it.
He didn’t know that there was anything wrong with calling it that, the way a bone-deep dread settled into Avid.

Charles cannot bear to let his lack of ability be the thing that kills her. He can’t bear to let the fact that he is dead and that she is alive be the thing that renders her unable to continue.
As the Cat King breathes life into Crystal’s lungs, the sort of life that Charles has not had in so long, the realization starts to creep in that Charles would rather Crystal be alive, able to feel the Cat King’s mouth, able to grow, able to breathe, able to live, than to be with her.
Charles can never feel Crystal like the Cat King can. He can never live alongside Crystal, touching her, breathing with her, as the people like the Cat King can.
And that is a brutal realization to have. Charles cannot be the boy that he once was.
(When Crystal is hurt on a case, Charles realizes that he can't do CPR. When he calls in the Cat King to help out, this leads to realizations about more than just the case at hand.)
