But Jayce doesn’t seem the type to want Viktor’s ire. Something about his expression, so open until now, is guarded — wounded. Viktor squares himself and makes a bold guess.
“You want to be good for me, then?”
The energy between them snaps taught as piano wire. Jayce looks at Viktor with open wonder, his mouth falling open. It’s as if he’s been seen for the first time, though now that he’s said it Viktor finds the idea laughably obvious. A man who sought out someone whose life he could improve doesn’t do that for nothing. Viktor is so relieved to find something self-serving under Jayce’s idealism.
“I would,” Jayce says, his voice a strained whisper.

When the council first floats the idea, Viktor vehemently refuses. The idea that he needs any kind of lab assistant, let alone an android lab assistant, is preposterous. Insulting.
He argues until he has no words left, and the android appears in his lab the next morning.
